Amazon is offering a discount on its Prime membership for people who receive government assistance such as food stamps or WIC.

The program allows those with a valid Electronic Benefits Transfer, or EBT, cards to access Amazon Prime for $5.99 a month for one year.

"We designed this membership option for customers receiving government assistance to make our everyday selection and savings more accessible, including the many conveniences and entertainment benefits of Prime," said Greg Greeley, Vice President of Amazon Prime.

Yep, food stamp folks should keep their money not for food, but for stuff to order off Amazon.

If anyone is interesting I'm selling a truck load of baby formula for half the retail price. Gonna pick up that flat screen off my discount amazon prime.

Confused. Are you triggered that they get this benefit for a couple years? It could potentially help someone get back on their feet.

Why do you hate good business? If they can figure out a way to adjust their margins to what people are capable of paying should they not pursue that added profit? A lot of conservatives hate capitalism.

Hey man, you remember what Jesus said. Hate thy neighbor and screw the poors.

If people only used welfare for a year to get back on their feet nobody would have a problem . It's the generations of families that think they are entitled to govt assistance that piss people off.

Can you explain how going to Amazon even the slightest bit different in any way whatsoever from going to Wal-Mart?

Hell, you can even get food there as well.

And if I read it correctly, they are just allowing a discounted rate. NOT paying the subscription with WIC.

Again maybe I am just confused and will probably turn into the bad guy in this thread but how is this affecting anyone differently than normal EBT purchases?

You are reading it correctly.
It's the fact the company is charging more for a service to those who have a job.

Many consumer experts have said Amazon’s decision represents an effort to keep up with Walmart, which has long had a strong hold on the low-income marketplace.

Odd that you think government programs like this were designed for discount Tyler Perry movie watching.

Which they are freely doing with no government incentives or enticement.

Why do you hate capitalism? How does it hurt you.

For fricks sake, typically I'm on the other side of this argument but having outrage that "the poors" are getting access to services that you enjoy even with no tax dollars spent is absurd.

Just what they need, more handouts.

Our society is becoming fricked. We're catering to the lowest forms of humans and propping them up, allowing them to survive and reproduce. The cycle won't end until someone says enough is enough and makes these lazy motherfrickers actually work.

I don't mind it for people who are actually disabled and truly have problems and can't work. However, too many people manipulate the system and see welfare as a career option. A lot of drug dealers also manipulate and collect them too, just because certain communities feel the government/working population owe them something.

The problem is, once you hand out freebies, it's too damn hard to take them back without political consequences. And for career politicians, that's their biggest fear.
