Tried that one year and it was a fricking waste of time. A bunch of small-ish, ugly trees and they wanted twice as much $$ for you to do all the work.
yeah the trees that make pretty christmas trees do not grow in Louisiana

The plastic stand I have adds probably 6-8" to the overall height. You also have to take into consideration the tree topper.

I put my tree up on a pedestal. I got a wire spool from work that's about 3' in diameter and 16" wide. I laid it on its side put my stand on top of the pedestal and the tree in the stand. 2 benefits, you have more room under the tree and you can buy a smaller tree to save money. Been doing it that way for years.
To answer your questions.
Get the plastic stand and put it on while the tree is horizontal, its easier. Once you have it set up you can adjust it. Keep water in it.
Also get a Christmas Tree bag. You put it under the skirt, when Christmas is over remove the skirt, pull the bag up around the tree and throw it away. Less mess to clean up.

Exactly. There's a reason all the nice looking trees are hauled in by trucks.

The tree I bought from Lowes last year came with one of those.
It's still in my pantry in case I ever need a body bag.

Salmon, your over thinking this padna. Go get a wide base stand for stability, drop the tree, work it straight, then water it. Simple simple

.any particular type of stand? Do I have to water the tree? Any tips? Do they shed?
I like the plastic stands, they hold more water, are better for the floors and are harder to tip over. About $15.
You have to water the tree. Kepp water in the bowl at all times.
Yes it will shed.

Yes to all of those questions. The deeper the water reservoir in the stand the less watering required.
Since they are disposable, go to the grocery store and spend $30 and don't get ripped off by the tree lots "by the foot" rates.

plus the farm has what it has, they don't get truck loads weekly so by now it's pretty picked over

No sugar, no aspirin: that's all a bunch of BS.
OP, they will shed right when you first put them up, but keep them watered and you'll be fine.

crack head bob does it every day all day plus I don't want sap on my hand like terd

Since you have no idea what you're doing or even what all you need, just go buy a nice artificial tree. They come with the stand and everything. Plus, being totally unfamiliar with the whole process, you're less apt to burn your house down with an artificial one than a real one. While you're there pick up a few boxes of Christmas tree lights (colored or white, whichever you prefer) and a bunch of Christmas Tree ornaments, garland, and a star to put on top.
When you get home start with the lights wrapping them around starting at the top and working your way down. When you're done with this first step it should look something like this;
Next put ht ornaments evenly around the tree and finish with the star on top. When you're done, this should be about what you're looking at;
You could also buy an artificial tree with the lights built in. I'd stay away from these because the lights tend to go out after a year or two. Better to just buy new lights every year.
Good luck & Merry Christmas.

get the christmas tree miracle grow. it's awesome.

Where do you live? Don't do tree farms in LA , those trees have weak branches and won't hold ornaments. Get a Frasier fir already cut.

We like the Christmas tree lots here (Atlanta), but they're largely staffed by outdoorsy college kids that do a good job, so it may be different elsewhere.
Growing up we always got Leland Cypress trees that we cut ourselves from a tree farm. I like that, but it's certainly more of an effort. Frazier Fir this year. Went to a lot last night, picked it out, dude leveled the base and put it in the stand for us.
In and out with an 8 footer in 15 minutes. Also, first time I've ever used the plastic stands, they look shitty but are pretty awesome to use.

I didn't know if they made other kinds...like metal or plastic or different designs
I've never had a Christmas tree. I have no idea how this works.
Get a "Swivel" stand from Lowes or HD. A little more pricey but will save your marriage. TRUST ME
