So this is the first year I will ever have a Christmas tree. I never had one growing up and my wife always had fake ones, but if I'm going to do this whole Christmas thing, I want to do it right, so I want a real tree.

Now what do I need?

I would assume I need a stand...any particular type of stand? Do I have to water the tree? Any tips? Do they shed?

Help me OT.

A Christmas tree stand is usually the best type of stand to get for your Christmas tree IMO

You don't have to... but it definitely helps

I didn't know if they made other kinds...like metal or plastic or different designs

I've never had a Christmas tree. I have no idea how this works.

It's really not hard. Just get some basic plastic stand, remember to fill it up with water every day or so, and get a skirt to help catch the needles. Real trees are the only way to go

Save yourself time and money and go to Home Depot or Lowes. Pick out the tree you like (I'm partial to Fraser firs) and the guy will trim the trunk and wrap it for you.

I like the plastic tree stands. They last longer and don't wobble like the metal ones.

FYI put the tree in the stand first and get it moved where you want it before you put water in the stand.

Oh and if you don't like having sap all over your hands you'll probably want to wear gloves to keep from getting Christmas tree jizz all over you.

Stand with a reservoir for water.

Just replenish when water gets low.

These trees can last a while and even thrive.

And they also make great bonfires on NYE.

Or if you have a pond they make good artificial reefs.

Tried that one year and it was a fricking waste of time. A bunch of small-ish, ugly trees and they wanted twice as much $$ for you to do all the work.

Ended up stopping by Home Depot on the way home.

Get a stand like this one. Makes straightening the tree much easier. Cost about $50 but worth it if you've ever cranked on those screws to get the damn tree straight.

I use the metal ones because those are the ones they put on for me.

If you get an 8 ft tree tell them you want a stand for a 10', if you get a 10' buy a stand for a 12'

you don't want to wake up in the morning with water, needles, and ornaments all over you floor

You'll probably also want to get a tree skirt to help with needle clean up when it's all said and done.

Do you have any pets?

How tall are the stands? I have 9 foot ceilings.

I'm assuming an 8' tree is about max that I want?
