I've got news for you. Adolescent boys and girls are not the same and do not react to events like this in a similar way psychologically. It's far more difficult to coerce a male as he has to get aroused for sex to happen. He can't just sit there and be frightened into compliance.

It's still illegal for someone that's more than 36 months older than a person under the age of 18 to have a physical relationship with them

This depends on the jurisdiction and usually is different for teachers.

While this is true, I would like to add.

I'm sorry. Putting someone in jail for 22 years for fricking ANY 17 year old in a completely consensual encounter is goddamned insane!!!!

shite. There are men convicted of RAPE who didn't get 22 years!!

No. They were employed at different schools.

The three way you are thinking of was outside of New Orleans. The girl got about thirty seconds of probation because her dad is a judge.

She's going to get all the pussy, and dick (made out of bars of that Bob Barker soap) from the female inmates she wants now in prison.

Because for some reason idiots have it in their mind that boys know what they want but girls have absolutely no clue

I feel as this flies in the face of reality. How many teenage girls date older guys?

"Girls mature faster than boys" right?

All adults should be treated equally regardless of gender.

Why did the Judge keep bringing up and endorsing faith?

22 years is excessive. It's a farce. I think the judge's faith played a part. Hopefully that gets corrected to an appropriate sentence on appeal.

That is ridiculous. If this same exact 17 year old robbed and killed someone he would most certainly be tried as an adult in court. I mean you read about courts wanting to try15 year olds as adults in certain situations. So there's no doubt a 17 year old would be tried as an adult. You know why??? Bc he freaking knows right from wrong. So you're telling me he is old enough to be tried as an adult in court if applicable, but he's too young to consent to fricking his teacher. Sorry, doesn't add up. And I'd feel the same if it was a 17 year old girl fwiw.

Multiple victims and she tried to Jesus her way out of it. Not a bad strategy in the south, but the judge had none of it and threw the book at her. It happens.

Teachers are in an implicit position of power over their students. Google in loco parentis.

The boy's life will be more screwed up for the next 22 years than if he would have kept his mouth shut.

I knew 17 year old college students.

I was one...This is stupid, it would be stupid if gender was reversed. Should she loses her job? Yes, without a doubt. Putting someone in jail for having sex with a 17 year-old is beyond dumb. A 17 year-old knows exactly what they are doing and in many cases have done it before.

22 years is ridiculous.

Residential burglars with otherwise clean records don't usually receive this type of sentence, and there are few crimes as scummy as residential burglary.

A 17 year old girl or boy isn't that "victimized."

I think that she probably tried to play up the fact that she's a normal woman who goes to church regularly, etc. etc. etc. As if to let the judge know that she's not a sexual deviant. And that really pissed the judge off. At least that's how I read it.

The 22 years was more of an emotional response. Judges will do that sometimes.

ETA: he wasn't endorsing faith, he was saying in so many words, "how dare you use the religion card on me, if you're so religious you wouldn't have done this in the first place."
