Sorry for this being a FB link, it's well worth listening to. Garrett Graves was a true advocate for Louisiana

I am having a hard time following the chairman of this committee
Posted on 9/9/16 at 9:07 am to mpar98
I think he's so outraged with what's happened and how these FEMA clowns have acted is why.
I have had some dealings with him, he's a good man and I'm gaining more respect for him listening.

Chairman stated 50% of businesses in Denham Springs will not come back and home values will depreciate 25%-30%. I don't believe the numbers will be that high. I think 75%-80% of businesses will reopen and home values will decrease more like 20% which is still alot.
Sucks mule dick.
Sucks mule dick.

They could be if Feds keep getting in the way of people rebuilding.

Watching this on C-SPAN and fhey finally recognized Garret Graves by his real name
Posted on 9/9/16 at 9:32 am to SPEEDY
Graves is on this FEMA dude's arse

This is uglier than last weekend's football game.

Unfortunately disaster recovery is a bureaucracy that slows every facet restoration in an area.
I've worked in MS and TX hurricane recovery efforts and it was agonizingly slow and clumsy for the impacted folks.
I think Graves can help streamline the process.

From what I have heard:
Plantation Car Wash coming back like Benny's with free vacuums. No more detailing or oil changes
All Western Store closing
Rotolo's at Bass Pro already removed their sign
Voodoo BBQ not coming back
I don't know that 50% is the right # but those that try to come back & have a decrease in business from people not spending will end up closing.

I was told they are appraising houses for 85/SF for the FEMA portion of requirements and loss in areas that were selling for >100/SF

This isn't on CSPAN where I am ...

no matter what...this will be a painfully slow process and people will start losing their patience and their mental health will suffer.

You're right.
It's a tough situation to endure.

Again, the only modern parallel we have, and it's not exact, is St Bernard parish post-Katrina.
It's a chicken and egg thing.
Businesses will reopen and new ones will open if they feel the population is there to support them.
The population will return and rebuild if they feel there are businesses there to serve them.
Remember just as many homeowners did not have adequate levels of insurance and will struggle to rebuild, so will some businesses.
Some mom and pop places can't afford to reopen. Some can, and will decide they don't want to, and retire with cash. Some will open immediately, while others take a wait and see approach.
Things will evolve over time, eventually trending upwards, but I can promise you that DS and the area around it is permanently changed. Life will never be like it was the day before it started raining. Hopefully eventually it will be better.

Fema isn't buying the houses, they are paying to get them livable again. My MIL received about $26 per square foot back in March but there's a lot that goes into that calculation to make it go up or down.

It's over now but was on c-span 2
And Walker's mayor pissed off Cedric and another Dem when someone tried to compare the people in his city to the inner city residents of New Orleans while comparing this flood to Katrina.
