Can someone with more aviation experience explain what "spatial disorientation" is.

When you're flying in conditions with low visibility you can get confused about your position and movements in space to the point that you don't know wtf is happening. That's when you need instruments.
I don't actually have aviation experience, I just googled the term.

Basically it's the inability to interpret your altitude, airspeed, and attitude in an aircraft. What a pilot sees is not necessarily the reality.

More accurately, it's what the pilot FEELS is not necessarily the reality. He may feel like he's flying straight and level but in reality is in a diving left hand turn. That is why you must trust your instruments.
If I had to guess these guys weren't in complete IMC(in the clouds and can't see shite) or complete VMC (out of the clouds and can see for miles) but rather somewhere in between. Light fog and dusk or dawn and perhaps hadn't made the transition in theit minds from visual flying to instrument flying.

Yep. You can fly through a thick cloud for a while and it seems like you are turning when you aren't. Trust the instruments.

Lawyer friend of mine flies Blackhawks (that should blow some minds).
He said he came close to crashing into some trees in training and it really freaked him out.
I'll pass on that job.

Low viz, a kind of dizziness, start doubting instruments. Crash.

Dude, lawyer training sounds crazy. I had no idea they had to fly helicopters.
Side note-
Spatial D can be debilitating if severe enough.
I've had it on a perfectly clear night. Stars all over the sky and shrimp boats all over the water. You couldn't discern the horizon and couldn't tell the difference from the boats and the stars. My brain/butt was telling me that I was climbing at a fairly steep angle while I was in level flight. Instruments are your friend.

Lawyers starting to break into the untapped market of air med ambulance chasing.

My dad was in a Marine Special Weapons Squadron (nukes) in the 50's and they would fly around practicing low level flying. He said they learned that they had to climb up a little bit flying over lakes because a few pilots flying really low over the water became disoriented and flew into the water.
