And most people have to drive to work at a refinery so they just doubling up

I imagine it's standing room only at the offices of the local ambulance chasers.

I speak from experience that reports by news people are not very accurate until all head counts are done and the plant puts out the numbers. As was stated before working in plants is dangerous, we don't make cotton candy and popsicles in these places. That being said, they are pretty safe because of the dangers but things do happen. I know June 13, 2013 changed my life forever. Plants get rebuilt and things go on. I just pray everyone is safe and everything is under control. The fires usually burn longer because you don't put out a gas fire, you isolate the source and let it burn out while cooling and protecting exposures.

Why are there no pictures available on the net of the mushroom cloud from the 89 explosion. It was epic?

I saw it from my house all the way across town. We thought it was a nuke.

Looked like Exxon had a pretty major upset yesterday afternoon too, saw at least 4 flares start up in just a few minute from my office off Essen.

1989 Xmas eve explosion

Brings back memories. I was on the interstate around Chippewa exit when it happened and I thought a nuclear bomb went off.

I was working dispatch at White Castle PD. The swinging door opened a little, like someone had started to come in but didn't. My seat was positioned so that I could see that no one was there nor could possibly have pushed on the door without my seeing them first. I just thought it was the wind, until I started getting in calls from all around town and hearing the calls start up on the parish radio.

Later that evening I was working my primary job at a radio station in the Corporate II building. During long breaks I would take the ladder up to the roof and watch the fire from there.

I'm not being a pussy, it's just reality. Most plants have the potential for something catastrophic to happen. It isn't likely to happen, but the potential is there.

I have a few friends who work at Exxon and they are one of my major clients with my company. I am so glad they, and everyone, are okay.

Not what happened. Feed line to a tower failed catastrophically.

I had 25 people waiting in the parking lot until 7:30 to get in. It was a small but very hot fire. Destroyed a cooling tower, though.
