Why, because he's tired of seeing disgusting fatties lumbering through walmart? I run, lift and train my arse off and tracking this data has played a role. I wish every fat arse American had one. Or at least gave a damn enough about their conditioning to care about their daily exercise.

How does it track lifting?

I talked to a friend that has tried them all. She prefers the inexpensive Fitbit One ($50) that attaches to her bra.
Or the $100 Fitbit Zip that has the sleep tracker.

Bottom line. It helps but not much in terms of burning more calories. It works as a constant and passive reminder that you're sitting down and not moving. Also helps remind you while you eat. 3500 calories = 1lb of fat. Eat less, move more. It has always been up to the individual to do the work. This just helps keep it in your conscious mind.
And as previously mentioned, it can track your sleep patterns and movement in bed. That part may be of more use than the counting calorie aspect. Better sleep = better health. Better immune. Better metabolism. Etc.
I think it's a fad... but I also think when the dust settles from the big bubble, the fad will stick on a smaller scale.

It doesn't track lifting, just my heart rate, steps and movement while doing so. I track all my workouts in a notebook pretty religiously anyhow.
As others have noted, it's a tool. It won't make you fit or get you in shape by itself any more than owning a pair of tennis shoes or boxing gloves or treadmill will. You still have to put the work in.

I'd rather people be obsessed and skinny than fat.
ETA: theres definitely better (tech speaking) things out there but that doesnt necessarily mean better in effectiveness.

I count my steps myself and know how to back up a trailer without a camera. I don't need any technology, it's the devil.

How accurate do they seem to be?

Do you get disgusted when you see interracial couples walking around Walmart? If so I guess they should break up or stop going to Walmart because I'm sure everyone gives a shite what you think or disgusts you. Do everyone a favor and worry about you.

Do everyone a favor and stop being a big fat stupid idiot so my goddamn insurance premiums will go down.

Same as the shoes with toe cut outs. Some people will fall for anything and spend money on it.

Newsflash, homos with AIDS just pay higher premiums than everyone else. It's time to accept it.

I use mine to measure runs. It's very accurate.

I was thinking about potentially getting my wife and I one for Christmas. What is the model everyone is using? Is the charge HR that much better for fitness tracking than the charge? Are you really all that concerned with your HR outside of designated workout times. When I bike I use my garmin 810 with a HRM so I'm not sure I really care about my HR outside of that area.
