I've know several of these guys that do this for a living. Made tons of money but everyone was a drug addict.

We have some overhead cranes in our shop. They 100' from the floor to the crane way. I had to climb up to the crane way to pull up the control box so no one would use it. That 100' climb about wore my arse out and I was in pretty decent shape at the time, I couldn't aging climbing 1000', I'd be scared to catch a heart attact but not afraid of the heights.

We climbed the tallest tower down River road for fun. It was. And the power line tower by the river, and to the tip top of the MS river bridge...good times.

You'd want to throw up if you had the work the parachute or hang glider to live as well. Personal responsibility is a bitch when your life's on the line.

One of my coworkers climbed towers in the British Virgin Islands. He said the views were incredible but the towers shook. Imagine being 1000' up on a tower that is shaking 18" side to side

It was a radio tower so only antenna and dish. The one I was retrieving was an internet data broadcast radio.

I don't know what the electrical dangers are really but I don't think it's that dangerous.

The one we climbed down River road was vibrating like crazy at the top. They had metal fins connecting all of the guide wires and the wind was howling, but the vibration almost seemed more electrical than that. We didn't do much sight seeing since it was dark and the vibration was creepy as hell.

We used to go up the power line tower by the river and drink/hang out though. You could sleep up there if you wanted to.

climbed down River road

Was that the one south of LSU on River Road? Back in late '60s there were 3-4 of us from high school that would climb that one at night with beer and drink up there along with getting high. That one vibrated like crazy.....we had a ball.....no way in hell now.

For a real pucker factor check out these guys on a 2200 foot stick that free climb,( which is allowed by OSHA) only tying off while they rest. LINK With proper safety gear, there have been very, very few tower crew fatalities compared to ordinary construction site work. Most of the fatalities were due to a failure of the structure itself or lifting equipment, not from the act of climbing up or down.

THAT link is the one gives me serious vertigo. The GoPro views and all that free climbing kills me. My favorite comment on that video:

quote:

How do we not have robots to do this job yet? I wouldn't climb that tower of death even if I was getting chased by a penis nosed monster with spider legs and there was no other way to escape. I'd let that foul creature lay eggs in my abdomen then happily give birth to his arcane children while they used me as their first meal. I don't even know what these tall arse f*****g poles are used for but if my boy had one I'd at least try to bounce on it lol give a like if you’re big money and don’t forget ted cruz dreams to escape the nightmare that is his life.?

I agree in that situation I'd say screw it. But the thought process is in case he turns his head the wrong way or head goes up and bangs against a piece of metal - to save his head from injury.

He has a hard hat on. like that's gonna cushion his fall.

He also has a fall arrest system though

The hard hat is likely so he doesn't bump his head on anything on the way up or in the event that he does fall and hit something on the tower. It's not to protect him from going head first into the ground.
