This is an amazing event.

quote:

The European Space Agency's Philae lander has made space history by successfully reaching the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The landing, which took place at 11.03 AM ET, was accompanied by rapturous scenes at the ESA’s control room in Darmstadt, Germany. Philae is the first probe to land on a comet. Earlier on Wednesday, the ESA released the first image of its Philae lander separating from the Rosetta mothership on its ambitious mission toward the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The separation, which took place around 4 AM ET, marked the start of a 7-hour journey to the comet’s surface. The Rosetta spacecraft and its Philae lander have been on a decade-long mission through the solar system to rendezvous with the comet. The comet, which is about 2.5 miles wide, travels at speeds up to 84,000 miles per hour. The washing machine-sized lander drifted down to the comet and latch on using harpoons and screws. During the descent, scientists were powerless to do anything but watch, because the vast distance to Earth — 311 million miles — made it impossible to send instructions in real time. The plan is that Rosetta and Philae will accompany the comet as it hurtles toward the sun and becomes increasingly active as it heats up. Using 21 different instruments, they will collect data that scientists hope will help explain the origins of comets and other celestial bodies. The $1.6 billion mission launched in 2004.

this opinion is shortsighted. I like the idea of countries working in cooperation for these missions. Space exploration is for the betterment of all humanity, not some patriotic garbage.

It's not patriotic garbage. NASA was a win win for this country. Countless technological advances came from it's missions. Now we can't even take our own astronauts to the space station that the US largely funded and built.

Right, because landing a roving robotic laboratory on the surface of Mars, which requires an atmospheric entrance and has a gravitational pull 100,000x stronger than that comet, is the work of amateurs.

Do you have a link to where you got that from? Or was there a picture attached to the article:

?

Also, this is pretty crazy:

along with the planning it takes to land the craft on something traveling at 84,000 mph.

I'm pretty certain I read article about this last week and NASA played a role in the endeavor. Goober.

So they're worried that the anchors that hold the probe down may have not worked properly.

So fricking cool

The harpoon landing gear didn't fire? Where's Bruce Willis when you need him?

There isn't much out there that isn't moving. It's not like the orbiter or landing module were stationary and trying to drop down on a comet as it rushed by at 84,000 miles an hour.

Not taking anything away from this, but any landing should equally impress you (like on Mars or a return landing to Earth) if the comet's movement and speed tops the list for you.

We are doing our own things.

Sorry, but things aren't technologically lopsided that we can expect to be the first to do EVERYTHING.
