Yeah, EGR issues are going to be abundant. I expect a lengthy extended warranty at the very least.

From what I saw they're planning to pull all the used ones off the lots. Resale is going to blow big time.

You do not have to use the dealership. I checked warranty info when I decided to service my DSG transmission myself. You just have to show receipt for correct fluid/filter purchases. Faulty install aside, you're legally allowed to maintain the vehicle yourself. I did however take it to a shop to check my fluid level, as I don't have the software.

I will be getting the diagnostic software now, as I plan to do all the scheduled maintenance myself at this point.

You do not need the diagnostic software to do the schedule maintenance. I have done the scheduled maintenance without it for 60k without a problem. DSG fluid change and all.

You're gonna wear the wheels off yours, so it won't matter.

Anyone wanting to trade a 2-3 year old one is gonna take a beating.

Yeah. There's a chance in the next year we wouldn't be driving as much per week and we're going to sell it.

Going to have to keep an eye on this. Never thought I'd join a class action suit but may have to in this case.

I'm not keeping it if they force band aide software on me.

I will not be bringing my car back to the dealership for anything if they force a software update. Will most likely kill fuel economy

I'm not concerned with a small drop in mileage. The problem will be reliability. They almost certainly did this because the emissions control equipment couldn't handle continuous operation. They're going to band aide tune it because they have to, and it's going to die.

My issue is any service work has to be done by me now, and I don't want to change the damn timing belt on this thing myself.

Independent shops will be able to effect repairs like timing belt replacement. Reprogramming the parameters of the CPU will be the issue to avoid.

They'll be a class action suit brought (and won) and paid out with regard to this issue.
VW might opt to do wholesale buy-backs, but they'll still be those who opt-out and take their chances on the results of the suit(s).

Is this the same TDI powerplant that M-B uses and how does that affect them?

Is there history of an auto company doing this? Because I find that hard to believe.

Did you get fluid levels checked for the DSG? I did the top fill method, so I probably didn't have to, but seeing as it was my first time, I wanted to make sure.

Any special tools needed for other maintenance? I'll be honest, this is my first diesel, so I'm green to their maintenance.

28 July 2015:

"Fiat Chrysler has been ordered to buy back close to 200,000 Ram pickup trucks and Dodge SUVs as part of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation charging that the auto giant failed to remedy problems with the vehicles during a 2013 recall.

The buyback program is part of $105 million in civil penalties the NHTSA levied against Fiat Chrysler for what it called its "lax repair and recall completion rate" in 23 recalls that involved more than 11 million vehicles, the Detroit Free Press reported. The punishment is the largest civil penalty every dished out by the safety administration."

The timing belt requires a special tool. Not sure about anything else.

My first diesel as well. I honestly had no idea about all the maintenance, but when the dealer quoted me $800 for the DSG service I said frick off and researched how to do it myself. There are a couple of youtube videos out there.

I did the top fill method as well. Just measured how much drained out and replaced it with the same amount.

Have you replaced the timing belt? If so, how hard is it to do yourself?

Guess we'll just wait and see what VW does with the recall before making any decision.
