Same.

I drew the short straw today.

One call/e-mail since lunch, and I was just copied, no action required.

I tell my people they can have it one of two ways.

Nothing to do? Take off. But when the work ain't done next time, I better not hear a word or see you leaving at 5.

Or

Work your hours each and every day. Don't be late, don't leave early.

You can have one or the other. Period.

My boss came into my office and wondered why the hell I was still at work.

OP sounds like a swell guy to hang out with.

Nothing worse than an entitled puss begging to leave early all the time...except for that passive-aggressive fig that monitors everybody every minute.

Don't be that guy.

And to the poster laughing at hourly employees...the joke is on you. My overtime spits on your haircut.

The flipside is the person who took today as a vacation day, will find out on Monday that everyone left at noon today, and will throw a fit that they're being charged for a full vacation day when everyone else came in for four hours.

Still at work and it's fine with me. Pretty content to be getting work done without being bothered.

Your job must suck if they don't "surprise" you by letting you cut out early on Thanksgiving and Christmas eves

I sent my staff home at 3. One offered to stay on until my last conference call of the day in case I need something. If I hadn't fricked up and scheduled this call I would have cut out around noon. Most of my clients are not working today. Not much productivity. Why hang around just to be at the office?

my old boss was one of those types that thought if you weren't at the office, at your desk, you weren't working.

my new boss realizes I am on my phone/email from the time I get up til 7 in the evening. if im not at work a full 8 hours, oh well. and that's how it should be.

Do people really have an issue with the first? You say it like it is a bad thing.

Aren't most jobs that are lax with time ones that also expect employees to work late and whatnot when the work demands it?

We have all kinds of holidays off.. we can come and go as necessary for errands whenever.. etc. But we also don't dick off for the sake of saying we had a "lunch break" every day.. and we work late anytime we need to.

I get 6 weeks of PTO a year, plus sick leave. I'll take off early as I feel the need.
