Exactly. I'm glad you can finally admit construction is less important than engineering.
OBVIOUSLY joking

have a shittier degree than engineers do
You sound like my buddy who is an engineer. He once told me that he didn't understand how I made more money than him, because my degree was "shitty" compared to his engineering degree. I have a masters degree; some engineers are delusional.
I don't know who complains about school more: engineers or nurses.

You must be talking about industrial engineers.

ot, if we both open our ears every now and then, we can learn a lot from eachother
Engineers were "usually" never in the field, and The Craftsmen were never in the office making "those" types of decisions.
You are spot on when you say they need each other.
as far as the money, from what i see in my particular plant, with a good bit of OT, u easier make more than most Maintenance Engineers. But Engineers make there money on 40. or just a little more with no physical labor and A/C all day.

One of the best things I did while at LSU for EE was work summers as a laborer for an instrumentation contractor. 2 summers of actually running conduit, pulling wires, and fooling with instrumentation helped out a lot when it came time to design plants as an Eng.

Exactly. I make more money than my engineering friends but I work out of town and very long hours. They work 40hrs a week, maybe(CP3 ), and get to sleep at home every night.
Sometimes I wonder if it is worth it

I think it's hilarious when people get butt hurt cuz they went to "the school of hard knocks" to get where they are now instead of copying solutions manuals and funneling beer for a few years. College>work

Yep, It makes finding a job much easier as well, with a higher starting pay.
Plus, Instrumentation is usually not taught in a class. that's hands on learning. Its also one of the better fields to be in right now. Plants are paying big money for employees with this knowledge.

Not anymore you don't

And can take PTO whenever they want. Option to work from home. Paid OT.

It is. 100%

Doesn't matter if your engineering or CM, you learn more at work than you do in school. That is a fact.
Posted on 3/23/16 at 4:13 pm to CajunCommander
The perks I like the most are the free lunches with vendors and contractors and the free travel.

You shouldn't have left your W2 on the counter idiot
You must have gotten a significant raise then

Not necessarily. I have learned close to zero mechanical theory since graduating. Despite popular opinion, that shite is useful in the real world. You wouldn't believe how many people don't understand how a bolt works.

I lost my paid OT last year
Luckily I've only worked more than 40 hours twice since then
Posted on 3/23/16 at 4:20 pm to Croacka
I never had paid OT where I am. I frickin wish. My average is about 55 hours/week.

I love my job as an engineer. I did a field walk down of a giant heat exchanger built in 1953. No idea what some of the shite on that vessel is. Got assigned some fairly impossible projects and got two pages of hand drawn diagrams and equations from the director to review. Nutty crap.
Posted on 3/23/16 at 4:28 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
Being on hourly salary is great. Bill out every hour of work, so anything after 40 and we gettin paid. Benefit to being billable I guess.
Posted on 3/23/16 at 4:33 pm to CP3
I'm overhead
It's all good though. I make decent money and essentially do whatever I want as long as I handle my shite.
