I know a guy who was once asked in an on-campus interview if he really meant to put his GPA on his resume.
He said "I thought that was something you are supposed to do."
"...only if it's good."
He said the interview didn't last much longer.

That's awesome

No offense but that's a radio station, they aren't hiring 4.0 students from Rice

Yeah really.. If an employer says the selling point of your resume is not putting your gpa, it's probably not a hedge fund job.

Well, if you graduated with a sweet 2.2, that GPA is going to be glaringly important to an interviewer, regardless of what they say in a survey.

Nope.

If you got a 2.2 while working full time and already have 2+ years of experience I'd hire you over a 4.0, that didn't work at all during school because mommy and daddy paid for everything and has no experience.

I assume you aren't an employer or involved in the hiring process.

I assume you're hiring for jobs that don't require much book learning. That is definitely not true for all employers.

I think most have touched on this, but i think this is an all things being equal thing. Work experience is the most important because most people applying for a job will have all the other stuff and be very similar in those areas.

I hire and I'm taking the 4.0 with an internship over the guy that waited tables for 2 years and made a 2.2

In my experience in applying for jobs what they look for is this. In the past 6 months I've applied to roughly 70-80 jobs. 3 phone interviews, 2 in person interviews and no job offers.

1. Do they know you.
2. Do you have a degree in the field.
3. Are you a minority.
4. Experience.
5. GPA
6. Do you know what the frick you're doing.

Well i'll hire the 4.0 student and my company will blow your company with your dumbass employees out the water

That's cool, but I wouldn't hire either of them.

I'll stick with the 2.2 guy that already has 2 years of job experience in the field he's applying for.

But if that work is either working in a bar, waiting tables, or any other common college job, a 2.2 GPA and work experience is not very good.

I can tell you that having a 4.0 GPA or having 2.0 GPA would make a big fricking difference to me if I were hiring. Most people don't have either and fall somewhere in the middle, though, so I can see why the other shite comes into play more.

But let me put it this way: I graduated with a girl who was in school for 3.5 years and attained a 4.0 GPA in Finance or Econ, can't remember which. If she had done nothing else, that alone would have merited a job at most places (didn't hurt that she was a pretty girl, either). Of course, high achievers in school tend to be high achievers in everything else, so those internships, jobs, etc. that these employers want really go hand in hand with higher GPAs. There are few people who earn 4.0s and do nothing else in their free time.

In which case he wouldn't be a "new grad," which defeats the purpose of the poll.

Anyway 2 years' experience means a smoother transition and higher productivity in the short term but doesn't mean anything in the long term. The smarter guy won't be inexperienced forever, but the dumber guy isn't going to magically become smarter.

What do you think an internship is?

I know what an internship is and no one graduates with 2 years worth of internship.

If I can find someone who has worked in his field full time for 2 years while getting their degree they are going to be the one to beat.

My first two jobs out of school were through contacts that I made in internships while in school. My next job was also through one of those contacts. I've never been asked my GPA, but I did turn in a transcript as "proof" of my undergrad degree. That was after I had already accepted the job though.

Believe me. I work for a large oil company, and as we cull through the engineering grads for the highest GPA's, finding one with a good personality is about as rare as a Rhodes Scholar on an NBA team.

That said, the big money jobs won't even let you put your resume into the system if you don't make the GPA requirement. The opportunities the 3.5+ Guys had were far more plentiful and for far more money, despite having far less experience than me

Truth. And I'm one that absolutely hates this approach. Give me a 3.0 student with good experience and a personality over the 3.8 inexperienced, socially inept grad every day of the week. If someone got through an engineering degree at a reputable institution, I can teach them the job. I can't teach them a personality.

well, to be honest, you're just hiring calculators and you want the ones that are the most accurate.

A good list, but if you were rank ordering, you need to move #3 to #1. That's why I keep telling my two boys that they need to hit the other 5 out of the park, they can't change that one.
