I'd imagine it would be like Uber and passengers would be rated. If you don't want anyone less than an OT 8 riding around in your car you could deny them.

my fiancees brother works in AI and he told me the reason why self driving cars wont ever happen
Right off the bat, never say never.
quote:

because its literally impossible to judge intent.
...and rarely say 'impossible'.
quote:

He said something to the effect of if a car was backing out of a driveway an autonomous car would just freeze up because it wouldn't know the intent of that driver backing up
I wouldn't say it would "freeze up", but yeah it would probably slow down until it knew it was safe to proceed. It's really just a few simple calculations for a computer to make this determination.
quote:

if you have a ton of these situations in real life you'd get a problem.
As someone else mentioned, Google's cars have driven over a million miles and predicting human behavior and intent, while it is a problem, doesn't seem to be an insurmountable one. We and our cars still have to abide by the laws of physics.
quote:

He said there was just no way to have full autonomy ever.
Full autonomy is easy, it's the transition from manual to autonomous driving that's the hard part. I think it will take a long time, but it will happen. But not so much because it's a hard technical problem, more because of the hard legal and political problems.
quote:

I love Musks plan, if he had apples balance sheet and hundreds of billions to burn through trying this stuff out Id love it even more, but my issue is Tesla balance sheet looks awful and now next week the gigafactory opens and they're having a party and its like 14 or 17% complete. Even yesterday he was like 45 minutes late on his release of this master plan and it just seems like he can never get anything done on time.
In his defense, he does run three very large companies, so I'm sure he's very busy. As for getting things done on time... a lot of the shite he does has never been done before. If you ask me, he gets almost everything done ahead of time. He sets very ambitious goals, and the dude seems to keep plugging until he accomplishes them. I would prefer he set tight schedules and be a little late than set long schedules and be a little early. The former gets more shite done.
quote:

I guess its one of those love the company, hate the stock situations for me
A lot of people feel that way, but I've loved the stock since it was at $40. And I will probably continue loving it until the day they shut the doors. Apple made a whole lot of money pushing the envelope in a particular industry, and I think Tesla will do the same. It's clear, to me at least, that electric and autonomous vehicles are the future, and I think Musk will be the one leading the way for many years. I mean, look at what he wrote:
quote:

I should add a note here to explain why Tesla is deploying partial autonomy now, rather than waiting until some point in the future. The most important reason is that, when used correctly, it is already significantly safer than a person driving by themselves and it would therefore be morally reprehensible to delay release simply for fear of bad press or some mercantile calculation of legal liability.
He doesn't give two shits about the press or even legal trouble, he will continue to do what it takes to change the way we do things. You could argue that he doesn't care about making money and just wants to change the world regardless, and honestly that's my only worry about him and his companies. But it does take a lot of money to do what he wants to do, and I think he will do what it takes to make as much of it as he can.

Experts in rocketry also were saying 5 years ago that landing a used 1st stage booster in order to reuse it was impossible.

Yeah, the dude makes the impossible possible in half a decade. I have a hard time betting against him.

Id love for his plan to succeed, but science aside this stuff is going to cost money and secondaries and dilution and I'm sure investors keep giving it to him but that share count is gonna creep up quickly

SpaceX is a total cash cow poised to become a monopoly on space travel. Their costs are over less than HALF their nearest competitors who are some of the biggest aerospace and military-civilian contractors in world history.

Right now.

He's shitting more money with SpaceX than he will need for SolarCity, the GigFactory or Tesla. They're all interconnected. No lie...if you've researched his stock and don't understand the guys plan, the other businesses and how they are interconnected to each other, purposefully designed to bankroll and complement each other, then you probably should be afraid of the stock as a low information investor.

To be honest though, you have participated in threads on the Money Talk Board where we have talked about EV's Musk, and the business you are in at length and in depth already over there. I think your businesses cloud your opinion re: Musk in general and EV's in specific.

Elon Musk is an idiot and I generally I support not giving him the time of day.

However, only at TD could so many people be proud for saying that they didn't read something.

I'm sure you guys spend all day not reading something. Lazy dumbfricks.

Right. He only created the first ever reusable stage-1 rocket. What did you do last weekend?
