I remember when I was in school there was a kid in my class who consistently never had money for lunch. The school sent notices home but they NEVER denied the child food. I would raise hell if that were my kid. Of course, if that were my kid, the point would be moot. The money would be there or my child would bring his lunch.

In school they would let you get two free lunches. We actually had to have Cash. I think elementary was $1.25 for lunch. extra $.25 per milk
If you didn't have money you got a peanut butter sandwich and water.

The kids still got milk and an orange. The parents should be embarrassed and apologize to their children.

I doubt they physically took the food away and threw it in the garbage. The media is sensationalizing this or the parent/kid is lying.

quote:

On Tuesday, the calls to parents continued. When lunch time came, students who still had negative balances were told they could not have a full meal but were given a piece of fruit and a milk for lunch. The district does this so children who don’t have money for lunch can at least have some food and not go without.

Unfortunately, children are served lunch before they get to the computer for payment. The children who didn’t have enough money in their accounts had their normal food trays taken from them and were given the fruit and milk.

This situation could have and should have been handled in a different manner. We apologize.

quote:

District spokesman Jason Olsen said cafeteria workers weren't able to see who was in debt until after the lunches had already been handed out. He said the workers threw out the lunches because they can't be served to another student. The students whose lunches were taken away were given fruit and milk.

piss poor way of handling the situation.

There were days I couldn't eat in high school because I had an outstanding balance. Sounds like shitty parenting IMO.

This happened at an elementary school. I would say its a different situation.

You would be surprised. My wife (no pics) works in the school system and while it is doubtful that something like this would happen in our area you never know what is going on at the home of these kids. The amount of unanswered correspondence between her and parents is ridiculous. The amount of coats sent home for winter, and bags of food they send home over the weekends is just not something you would be able to wrap your mind around.

They were still getting food. I agree though that it's a different situation...the parents should have more responsibility making sure their children are able to eat.

Sometimes we don't receive notices when the account is getting low--only when it goes negative. But the school lets the children eat and pay the balance the next day. We used to bring our lunch money each day when I was a kid, so this wasn't a problem.

I've had teachers at my son's school tell me that for many kids, the only time they eat is at school. They don't get fed at home. Feed the kids, beat the parents.

same here, but I do happen to see these same exact kids outside convenience stores with Cheetos, soft dranks, and an assortment of $5 worth of junk food..

"beat the parents"
I vote yes, let's change some "laws".

No. It is shitty parenting whether it is elementary or high school. Lunches cost like a dollar or two.

We could use cash and meal and tickets. Meal tickets could only be used for the standard plate lunches, and cash could be used for both. I was a hungry dude and I used to use both each lunch.

They gave the poor kids 1 free meal ticket per day though. This was in St Tammany(MHS), where people actually have a thought process, so TIFWIW.

These kids were probably fat. Scruffy sees no problem here.

Unless it was red beans and rice day. Then screw those teachers for throwing away good food.

proves how stupid of a move it was to do this over a small amount of $.

the best part is how they complained about losing money on these kids and then turned around and threw all the food away. BRILLIANT!

Chicken nuggets, mac-n-cheese, green beans, and a chocolate milk >>> red beans

Scruffy thinks you are dumb.

Red beans and rice, cornbread, okra, chocolate milk bag > your puny meal

I fail to see the issue here. Food cost money, either send some money with you kids or a pack lunch.

There are $1 lunchables at the grocery store. These parents couldn't scrap together $1?
