It always sounded to me like a way for someone to prove who was the boss to a kid and the parent.

oh, that is exactly what all this is about. What happened to talking to people. I sent an email, now you are not in some way compliant and I snatch a meal from your kid.

Give me a break.

novel idea. Amazing what attention and follow thru can do. I would bet you had nothing outstanding to worry about at the end of the year.

How do you think they buy food, pay staff, purchase and maintain equipment, etc?

They do it by breaking even.

Whats funny is they're so caught up on getting money, that even if you plan on paying for lunch, they have you fill out the forms for free lunch anyways, cause if you qualify, although you're paying, the school gets more money for each qualified free lunch kid there is.

I see no reason or benefit in throwing the lunches in the trash

1) giving the food away is violation of policy and would result in someones dismissal

2) health rules forbid serving that food to another student

3) since no one paid, it affects the reimbursement rate. 40 meal costs would be a $100 loss. 40 peanut butter sandwiches cost about $10, so its a $90 no brainer each day.

Federal rules are the problem. They require a student have their food before they can be asked to pay

Was this the kids first day in delinquent? If not, they served them the day prior

Really, 2.50.

wouldn't the milk alone be like 20 bucks?

every school my child has been in, they give their lunch number prior to receiving the food.

It is also the principal's responsibility to prevent a unpaid balance of that type...I agree.

It happens to be January. So at this point these are kids that do not qualify for free lunch.

Their parents are just being pricks by not sending the money, and its not because they dont have it to send. The free lunch program is very generous on who qualifies

what is going on and then politely ask if they need time to come up with the money etc... try to leave them feeling respected and not like you are looking down on them for being in a tough spot.

And it gives you great insight on any issues a kid may be facing as well in these situations.

Just looked it up. Its $3.16, and milk is an extra .20, so that's a total of $134.40 that would not be reimbursed as opposed to 40 sandwiches and milk.

Many districts have a no charge policy, so no one gets fed an unpaid lunch

I just checked the balances on my kids account to make there was plenty money in it. Reading this thread makes me realize that there are some pretty terrible parents out there. I feel sorry for the kids.

I'll bet they get some money from deadbeat parents, but seems a bit harsh to do that to the kids.

22,857 / 180 (school days) = 51 lunches per day that were not paid for.

Uh, we served over 47,000 meals a day in our district

So, 51 unpaid meals a day is almost impossible to track down. Each and every day!

UPDATE: The school never notified the parents of the low balance. I still argue that it was wrong to take and just throw away a lunch that was already given to the kid. Tell them up front, but don't give them a lunch and then take it.

The school fricked up. Said they will institute practices to prevent it happening in the future. Parents need to accept their apology and move on...not a big deal.
