I am guessing this program will lead to many inspection sticker tickets, window tint violations, and cracked windshield violations, and maybe a burglary prevented.

Why is a police officer doing it any different?

What would happen to a citizen who approached an officers vehicle, snooped around , and tried the locks?

Why can't the try to open your house door too?

Why not check you blood-alcohol why they are at it?

Random checks for illegal substances while you are walking on the street?

It's a slippery slope.

As I stated before, I dont believe they will be "trying the locks" and if they are, that is wrong. People look through the windows of police cars all the time.

Between that weird sting op when he was busting the gheys for those archaic sodomy laws, and this - I'd say it might be time for Sid to move on. Like I said before, I'm not some big ACLU lefty wacko, but if the things he isn't proposing doesn't scare the shite out of people, then EBR is missing the big picture.

one burglary prevented from common street crooks, but many from uniformed thugs. how easy will it be for them to open a unlocked door and help themselves to a few dollars that no one will notice is gone, or maybe some beats ear plugs?

I've been doing this for years but instead of leaving a note I lock the door if they pass or steal all the valuables if they fail.

I think they would be ok constitutionally if ALL they did was walk up to the car and look in the window. Pulling on the door handle and opening the door, even under the auspices of "we were just checking to make sure the car was locked", likely puts them in violation of the 4th amendment. If they see something illegal (i.e. drugs or drug related items) in plain sight by simply looking through the window, that doesn't give them justification to open the door and start rummaging around. However, I think it certainly helps in establishing the probable cause necessary to obtain a warrant to search the vehicle.

My personal thoughts:

1. This course of action isn't SOLELY just to "help out" absent minded people who leave valuables in plain sight or forget to lock their car doors.

2. Even if they don't open the doors or commit any constitutional violations, how stupid is it to put a flyer on someone's car to alert criminals that the car is either unlocked or has valuable sitting out for the taking?

Some locks aren't readily visible, or might be difficult to ascertain if they are locked or not.

Surely no overzealous officer would ever think of trying the door handle, right?

And if it happened to pop open, surely that officer (who already disregarded that what he was doing is illegal) would never think to just have a quick peek inside, right?

I don't understand people that have no problem with their private property being invaded by any person, much less one who could ticket/fine/arrest you for something.

Got a question for y'all. When I see a parked car with its headlights or dome light on I pull the handle to see if the car's unlocked and if it is I turn the light(s) off. Legally have opened my anus up for rape?

Do you ticket them for an expired inspection sticker and cracked windshield at that point?

Do you steal their belongings?

Hmmmmmmm... Both are kinds of thieves in that sense

More importantly, is THIS the kind of stupid bullshite our sheriff sits around thinking about? How absolutely moronic is all of this? It's like we legitimately made a genuine retarded person the sheriff.

Where's Nakamoto? Somebody needs to sound the DEEDEE alarm and get him on this PRONTO!

I going to start leaving flyers on police cars kept running outside restaurants: I could have easily stolen this car had I been a criminal. Signed - magildachunks.

So move on to the next one

quote:

Surely no overzealous officer would ever think of trying the door handle, right?
If found to have done this then he / she should be disciplined / fired. also, cops arent gonna walk down the road checking door handles setting off every alarm up and down the street

quote:

And if it happened to pop open, surely that officer (who already disregarded that what he was doing is illegal) would never think to just have a quick peek inside, right?

And anything found would be inadmissible in court due to an illegal search

quote:

I don't understand people that have no problem with their private property being invaded by any person,
Im all for my private property staying private. I also make sure I dont leave it unlocked and if anyone looks through the window they wont see any valuables or anything illegal.

ETA: I never said this was a good idea. Just that if done the correct way its not a violation of anyones constitutional rights.

So cops are about to start either stealing our stuff themselves, flagging our cars to make it even easier for thieves, or conducting completely illegal searches and breaching our property?

Pretty much what I got out of it.

This basically comes down to whether you think the police are always there to assist you and will never abuse their powers, or if you have a healthy mistrust of those who are given authority. Enough cops either don't know or willingly abuse the scope of their authority for me to fall into the latter category.

Aside from all of the good cop/bad cop stuff it is a stupid idea for the simple fact that it is a complete waste of money to pay sheriff's deputies to go around and "remind" people to lock their doors. Completely unnecessary.
