People increasingly are pointing lasers at aircraft, despite hefty fines and prison sentences for those who are caught.

On one night this month, aviation authorities logged 20 laser strikes in at least 16 cities, adding to the year's already record number of strikes. The Federal Aviation Administration has reported 5,352 laser strikes in 2015 through Oct. 16, compared with 3,894 in all of 2014.

Federal measures against air strikes include fines of up to $250,000 and up to 20 years in prison. In 2014, the FBI piloted a reward program offering $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of "any individual who aims a laser at an aircraft."

How much does a laser pointer bother a pilot?

(from article)

"We suffered flash blindness, after-imaging and then retinal burning that continued on for a while," pilot Robert Hamilton told CBS News, describing five laser strikes he's experienced as his crews were either taking off or landing. "We have to complete checklists, configure the aircraft, change our speed, change our pitch attitude, prepare the aircraft for landing or taking off, and at that moment to have our vision taken away from us, which is the most critical phase of flight is a very serious safety risk."

A laser pointer can blind a pilot during takeoff or landing, potentially resulting in a plane crash. It's actually a pretty serious issue.

Not disagreeing but how fricking accurate are these people with a laser to hit someone at distance in the eye

Instead of prison we should train them for something with that kinda accuracy

How do you get the proper angle to hit a pilot in the face at takeoff or landing?

I don't know. Maybe the laser light does weird stuff when it hits the cockpit window.

A news helicopter for the NBC affiliate in New York City was hit by a laser last week. A bright green light filled the cockpit as the helicopter flew over Prospect Heights. An NYPD helicopter was hit by a laser strike nearby around the same time.

Sounds like a cash cow. Bye said lasers shine at aircraft. Flip into someone's yard you don't like, call cops, collect cash.

I get reports of them all the time. Mostly green lasers. The pilot gives his lat longs and position of the laser and the police are on their way. Apparently it's very serious and can mess a pilot up. I never hear if they catch anyone though.

If you're going to the area the lasers are emanating from in Dallas (north of Love Field and in Pleasant Grove) and trying to find the culprit's name, make sure you habla Espanol.

I had never even heard of this before. It would seem like actually hitting a pilot in the eyes would be very unlikely. It's a pretty small target from pretty damn far away. What is it about planes that make them susceptible to this?

Maybe we can reconfigure some HARM missiles and start attaching them to commercial jets and just pickle those things off when a laser is seen.
