My wife and I just dropped ours. We were paying $50 a month for something we never used. We only had it because of the home security system but we just changed that also and the new system didnt need a land line for monitoring.
My wife and I have essentially done the same thing as mentioned above. My home phone was with AT&T costing about $50 per month. Went to wireless with AT&T with unlimited long distance for $27.00 per month. Had Custom Security install a cell phone since I no longer have a land line for home security. Price went from $20 to $30 per month but I actually am more secure now because a perpetrator cannot cut the phone line to disable the alarm system.

I use my cell# as my home#, but I don't give it out to just anybody. I don't get unsolicited calls any more. Getting on the do not call list is awesome.

I keep mine for emergencies and hurricanes.
I was about to say....I would think people would remember Katrina and not being able to call on cellphones cause all the signals were jammed sometimes. I would think if you lived in south LA you kept a landline for the sole purpose of in case of hurricanes(and you kept a corded phone as well...since a cordless will do you no good).
I was in Tucson during all that and because I had a 225 number....people that called my cellphone had to call several times to reach me. Didn't matter if they were calling from AZ or LA.

For those that dropped it, what number do you give out as your "home" number? if you give out your cell number, do you feel you get a bunch of pain in the arse calls?
I have a home phone but give out my cell as my home number. I get very few marketing related calls.

Even during that tropical storm two years ago, whatever it was called, having the land line was great. Beyond the crowded network, k eeping your cell charged was a hassle.

The 911 aspect is something else to consider. Like that article mentions....I don't think people realize that if you call 911 from your cell....they don't always know your exact location.
If you are home when there is an emergency and you have a landline...your location pops up immediately and therefore they can respond quicker.

Exactly and I feel that's a huge thing if you have young kids in the house.

A lot of places you can call 911 without service

I dropped the land line about three years ago. Bought a cellular gateway to handle the alarm system and signed up with VoIP provider callcentric.com. I pay them $12 a month for a set of calling features that makes ATT's U-verse look like a child's toy. BTW that fee includes a 911 listing and they ported my old number for free. I haven't had a telemarketer call on that number in over a year.

None of those are enough reasons to keep paying for it, in my opinion.
I didn't have a home phone during Katrina or Gustav and had no problems.

My home phone service is internet base Ooma. Buy the box for $120 and phone service is free just pay 911 fee and local taxes which is $3.81 a month for me. Unlimited long distance, call waiting, caller ID, answering machine, works on all 4 of my phones.

If you need home phone(security alarm) look into a VOIP service as vonage or magic jack
vonage works for an alarm? I was with out a home phone for years but have had one about 2. It's absolutely ridiculous the charges, etc.

If it is something for a store, I give my old home number. The stores can call whoever has that number and leave me alone...

Have not had a land line at home since 2002
Posted on 7/28/14 at 12:44 pm to LSUBoo
Gotcha...well like I said...because of the bundle with COX....it's cheaper to keep the landline. My bill would actually go up if I got rid of it.

I use my cell. Never get any telemarketer calls
If it's something sketchy, I'll give my work number

I dropped my home phone last month and added a third line to our cell plan for my babysitter. Home phone was costing me about 85-90/month. It cost $15/month for the new cell line with unlimited talk/text. Best move ever.
