'Doomsday' asteroid Apophis could hit Earth in 2036

LINK
1000 foot wide asteroid will brush past the Earth at a distance of 30,000km
Scientists claim little chance of it hitting us - but scientists warn of 'tiny but real' likelihood it may in 2036.

Whizzing past Earth at the relatively close distance of nine million miles tonight, Apophis is being closely tracked because of a 2004 study that predicted the rock has a 2.7 percent chance of hitting Earth in April 2029, which was later revised to 2036.

That is pretty freaking huge. I wonder how big it would be after entering the atmosphere.

Updated computational techniques and newly available data indicate the probability of an Earth encounter on April 13, 2036, for Apophis has dropped from one-in-45,000 to about four-in-a million

So at the passing, is it supposed to effect us at all or just fly right by?

Experts say the impact if Apophis struck the Earth would generate a blast equivalent to more than 500 megatons of TNT

The Tsar Bomba was equal to about 150 megatons. I doubt it would be a "doomsday" hit but it would seriously frick some shite up regionally. Would probably wipe an area about the size of Australia off of the map and cause a pretty long winter

Hope it hits the middle east

I believe they used to think a mile wide or more was necessary, but now they think it could be less.

I would like to go ahead and volunteer to drill a hole and drop a nuke to blow it in two. I have a few demands though. No one in my immediate family has to pay taxes ever again and I get to pick 400 acres anywhere in the U.S. with the mineral rights to said acreage (no property taxes either) and 1 billion dollars. That is all.

It will obviously hit the US.
You know, because we don't allow prayer in schools.

I remember watching a special once...

It said that in order for it to be a doomsday asteroid, it would need to be >1mi. In comparison, An asteroid the size of the the statue of liberty, lands on earth the size of a small car due to breaking up in the earths atmosphere...
