I grew up in east Arkansas. I really looked forward to leaving from about the 4th grade on, adulthood has proven I was right. It was cruddy when I was there, even worse now.

It is what it is.

The apartments we grew up in are now section 8!

I used to miss my hometown and always looked forward to the holidays but as years have gone by it's the same people doing the same shite. Some people are still trying to keep up with the joneses and will go broke trying to do it

Usually visiting Louisiana in winter is a break from the cold, cloudy Midwest weather. Things changed this year. Baton Rouge is struggling with the impact of the flood, my parents seem less happy, and there is just nothing there for me but them and some great friends. Of course I'll see a few high school friends....all of which have gotten older and little larger. Just a reminder that I'm not getting any younger either.

I am tired of the cold and crappy economy of Pennsylvania, but the realization that I'll likely never return to Louisiana is starting to sink in.

You should never go home. Once past 18, secure an education and a job and leave. Never come back. Your path should be one of mayhem, destruction, and the building of a new home where you keep large breasted women for breeding.

Boyhood home was Terrytown...parents now live on Northshore....it is safe to say I have no desire to return there...I hear it has turned to shite like many areas there do.

I'm from that area and I don't see it as that much different than from when I was a kid. It generally looks about the same and feels similar. Coming off of the bridge, Terry Parkway is nice (that part actually looks very classy with the lighting, landscaping and seasonal decorations). The same goes for Carol Sue and those are two of the main areas of traffic. The houses are still nice in those areas (though not new or really updated). The quiet areas with nice houses and good neighborhoods seem to be similar. My childhood street still looks the same and even has a good number of people living there that lived there when I was a kid.

The areas that are dumpy remain dumpy and may be a little worse (Holmes Blvd, apartment areas in certain spots, etc). I think past Behrman Hwy is the part that has gotten crappy, but there were some parts that were back in the day. But otherwise, I'm around there all the time and it feels very similar. It may not be saying much, but it still seems much better than most parts of the Westbank.

I certainly do..... can't figure out if it's getting trashier or if it was always that way and I was just to young to realize

Grew up in Gentilly, in NOLA in the 1950s-60s. Loved it then. Still love my memories, but parents and in law parents have all died; everybody else has moved away. I still love the food, but don't go back all that often anymore and then mostly in outlying Parishes between Northshore, Jefferson, St. Bernard and BR. Orleans is just a tourist thing now, and a fond memory of what used to be. That can get depressing sometimes, if I let myself dwell there. But if I really get objective about the whole thing, I do have to see how shabby it all is compared with other places I've lived. I miss the memories and the illusion.

I feel bad for you baws whose hometowns were ruined by massive growth, culture, etc.

The only thing that could happen to my country town is drugs, I guess.

No. My parents live in the country halfway between here and Knoxville. I love going back and driving the dirt roads I grew up on surrounded by hills and hollers. It's beautiful country
