It has led to a near unbelievable level of shallow behavior and simplistic outlook. People want to be famous. They want to be known, noticed. But they don't want to do anything to achieve this.

In the past, I don't think great men did things to be famous. Albert Schweitzer didn't do what he did to be known. Einstein wasn't trying to be famous...it was a by-product of their deeds. Egos existed then but not like now.

Women have lost their collective fricking minds due to social media.

There are three types of these people and it has pervaded every aspect of their lives:

1) the oblivious egotistical woman. Believes every little thing she does is important and everyone must know about it. From where she gets her morning coffee to her kid sneezing in the cutest way. When in public she constantly discusses her own life in excruciating detail as if every but of minutia is important and solely hers to experience. This catagory also fits with the perpetual duck faced pseudo-model

2) The perpetually offended woman. Everything and everyone is a trigger. Most of what she posts ends with a call for boycott or a call to arms for feminism over something stupid like a black janitor being "forced" to clean a spill of a white person or management throwing her out of a coffee shop after she sat there for 4 hours and didn't buy anything but tried to dissuade every customer from buying from that franchise. She'll always explain to you that you shouldn't be wearing that logo because one store manager of a store that sells that product madr a racist tweet 30 years ago.

3) The delusionally depressed woman. Believes everyone but her is living the life of their dreams because her Facebook feed is full of nothing but happy moments. She can't accept that that's what people post because no one posts the shitty times. She often says things like "everyone else gets vacations and shopping sprees and I have to go to work everyday".

It's definitely enabled people who previously were kept in check by societies norms.

And of course, it's changed our norms.

It wasn't so bad back in the myspace days and early Facebook days because those things were more tied to the computer than the phone. You would check it when you got home.

Now, you get alerts on your phone for tweets, Snapchat, Facebook, instagram, etc, in an instant. Constantly. All day.

That's why you turn off all notifications. The only notifications I have turned on are for Slack, and that's because it's work related.

These people need mental intervention. Seriously. I see this sentiment all over the internet. There have been a few threads here on TD about social media, and you always get a few posters saying other people make them feel like their lives are inadequate and shite.

That's insane levels of idiocracy.

My biggest gripe about the younger generation (I'm 29) is the fact that most of them have their phones shoved up their arse 24/7 but when you call or text them - no answer

Then the next time you see them it's 'oh man I never got a missed call from you'

What happened? Did he get over it? My friends are hoping this is a phase.

I have a family member that is 22 years old and hasn't even been on a date, no interest in driving, no interest in doing anything outside of video gaming. He is the final child so mom is enabling it. But its an ugly disorder. He's been addicted to video games since about 13.

If your friends care about their son, they will destroy the video game console and ban it. The temporary issues will be rough, but in the long run it will be best.

Sounds like they just don't like you

I know the feel. My mother never answers the damn phone, yet I see Facebook posts about how many fricking carrots she picked in the garden every day.

Yes.

Now there's an even more brutal level of bullying for today's utes. It used to be that once school was out for the day, the bullying ceased but SM has made it a continuous cycle. Personally, I think bullying, in moderation, can be a good thing, but this new level is not healthy for anyone.

Most older folks that I know are also on social media.

I don't see the big deal. Change is a part of life.

Not sure if it's social media or the smartphone that's more to blame.

Either way, it's every generation. The Police had a song called "too much information" that sums it up well.

I don't think it's a big deal either. If some kid wants to brag that they got a 4.0 or ate pretty sushi, what the hell do I care? Hell, making a 4.0 is freaking awesome and they entirely deserve praise from peers/family for that. Getting praise from others encourages people to do good things like lose weight, make good grades, etc.

I know a few individuals that go entirely too crazy on social media (5+ snapchats of their cats per day, videos of them in the bar every night, etc.) but that is more on them as individuals.

It has definitely created a "look at me" way of life for the average person. I feel like people do everything now with the intention of posting it on social media to show how cool they are, or how much fun they are having, as oppose to you know ACTUALLY having fun.

Girls are the worst with this. You see some big group of girls who are normally miserable fricking counts, they sit around together and look like miserable fricking counts, but for a split second they woop out their phone to take a pic and all of a sudden they're having the best time ever!!

Post it to FB with the caption "Best night ever!!".

Such a fake life.

the average attention span of young people when clicking a sight on their phones is 15 seconds. i.e., they only basically read headlines without reading the contents. So, I can definitely see why some are so easily mislead by what they read.

now compound this with essentially no critical reasoning ability, damn near zero historical perspective, and piss poor elementary/secondary education.

People are doing things solely for the ability to post on social media instead of doing things for it's own enjoyment.
