Middle aged people aren't much better about it. The women, at least.

I think this is virtually accepted everywhere. No disputes.

I couldn't agree more. Such an addiction. When will people learn that they are their own worst enemy?

The older I get, the less I want anyone to know any of my business.

I'm the same way. I have FB, twitter, etc. to see breaking news and good shares, but I haven't posted in years. I'm amazed at how self centered people my age have become. I've never seen so many mirror pics in my life and I'm embarrassed for a good amount of people I know.

yes.

social media has brought out the narcissistic personality of MANY people.

Look at the twitter, instagram, facebook, snapchat posts and what it is ALL about:

This is how great my life is. Whether its food/fancy restaurants, going out, vacations, etc. IM SO GREAT I GOT A 4.0!!! Its never: I failed my test.

People are so glued to their phones to update the world about their lives that they feel some kind of self importance in terms of how they have to show off.

I think smartphones made a bigger impact than social media. Social media was around in pre-iPhone days (see Myspace). But it didn't make as big of an impact because it wasn't very convenient to update your profile or post something when you had to be sitting in front of a PC to do it. Smartphones is what made social media into what it is now because of how convenient it became to post or check social media 24/7 no matter where you're at.

Older people seem much more into social media than young people. People my parents' age are obsessed with Facebook, whereas younger family members (18-19) have told me none of them have Facebook. Instagram has more businesses than anything else, but then you have instagram girls trying to make money for being hot. I wouldnt say this describes the typical young person either.

SnapChat is big with young people but it also isn't something you can spend hours on like Facebook was.

In fact, when around family members who are currently college students, they use their phone for texting.. Which isn't social media.

I'd feel better saying social media has had an effect on all people moreso than just young people. Many old folks have no idea how to behave online, so you end up with the cancer that is comments sections in articles.

I have talked about this in previous threads, but this was my master's thesis. I hypothesized that there was a strong relationship between over-reliance on social media and increased symptoms of social anxiety. I found significant results.... so yes, I do believe social media has changed people, and I have the data and research to prove it.

this is a problem that needs to be handled before it spirals out of control.

its not a generational thing, its a self control and discipline thing. there has to be a yin/yang. one cannot indulge in video games all day without an appropriate amount of responsibility/chores/errands/goals/job/social structure to tend to when not gaming.

Without a doubt.

Had a conversation with a guy about this 20 years ago, he thought it would have little impact on socialization. I thought it would be profound, and it is.

You really have to keep reminding yourself that the whole world isn't as negative as a few people with internet accounts.

I think the cellphone has changed people more than anything. It is such a powerful tool. People, mainly the youth, are obsessed with it and struggle to part with it for more than a couple of hours.

I think it's somewhat similar to the personality changes seen in actors, musicians, artists, etc. People now live their lives with an audience, or at least they think they do. That can lead to narcissism, depression, entitlement, etc. depending on the person.

That's because the younger demographics have left facebook because they think it's for "old people."

Snapchat and Instagram, among others, is where you'll find the younger (16-24 or so) age groups.

Doing what I do for a living it boggles my mind these idiots will put so much of their life details out in public. That's going to bite them in the arse one way or another down the road.

I heard a report about six months ago that the average attention span of young people when clicking a sight on their phones is 15 seconds. i.e., they only basically read headlines without reading the contents.

As a marketer, I can assure you that they spend way less than 15 seconds. We can see average time on site and video recordings of sessions. It's usually about 7 seconds.

No way. If you only included Facebook, maybe. When you include all social media, no way in heck.
