Well Yeah, that's what you should do... but most young people don't because they like the constant and instant gratification.

Good point. It probably also helps I don't like people.

Again, people have social media in their back pocket. Why WOULDN'T they pull it out and snap a photo when doing something cool?

Because you have a better view if you don't watch the race through a phone screen. Enjoy the moment.

But it isn't changing people.

Social media is just a symptom of human nature.

We created social media to fit us. That is why it is so popular.

We didn't change to fit social media.

Not one person in your picture is watching the race through their phone.

Oh, now I agree with that. Never understood people videoing entire concerts or something. But videoing a concert or event the entire time is different than snapping a photo on vacation.

It just isn't that black or white.

I remember my parents carrying their massive camcorder on vacations as a kid. We have literal hours upon hours of video footage, where clearly one of them had their eyeball in the lens for days. We have videos at home of me just playing in my room or eating some crackers or some shite.

I won't argue that social media made this even more common, but some people are just weirdos and document everything.

I doubt that. Would be hard to get a good picture without doing that.

At the very least, they are dickheads for making the people behind them look through their phones to see the race.

To be clear, I'm not saying that everyone at concerts or restaurants is doing so for social media. I'm saying that is definitely the case for some people.

There's no doubt it's changed people. I'm not sure there's a real argument here. Hell, my whole generation was moved by the changes in social media.

I just think you all are looking at it way too superficially.

Social media is just providing a service in which we already wanted and/or craved. Meaning we didn't change when we got social media. We were always that way. Social media is just the tool.

That amplifies douchebaggery and trashy behavior, thereby making it mainstream and "acceptable."

True, but it's not just that.

Think about how people's personalities and their values have changed since the days of snail mail to the days of text messaging? It's not only affected our expectations (profound affect) but the way we interact with people and perceive the things they do and say.

Not all of the changes are negative, some are definitely positive. However, society looks totally different today than it did in the 80's. People change as their relationship to others changes.

This is sort of a "does art imitate life or does life imitate art?" argument.

I'm going with the latter.

I've been thinking a lot about this topic the last few years. I'm a recent LSU grad (fairly young), and I have noticed growing up in the last 5 years or so that people began to become obsessed with looking at their phones and checking social media

While on vacation recently I remember standing in line behind a girl who looked to be somewhere between 15-20 years old. We were in this line about 5-10 minutes. During that time she never once looked up at the world around her. Instead she repeatedly took pictures of herself, posting each on her Instagram or Snapchat or whatever. I kid you not, during our brief time in this line, I'd bet she posted at least 20 pictures of herself.

100% disagree. It's all about relationships and information. Those things cause change.

I know a few people like this. And they drive myself and all of our mutual friends crazy. This is an individual thing. That individual just sucks as a person.

Nobody is saying every single person does things solely for social media.

No I don't think people intentionally go to nice restaurants or concerts simply to snap a photo. But some are so consumed by it they will spend a large portion of it behind a screen and worrying about how it will look to others as opposed to actually fully enjoying the moment.

There are very few generational differences at birth. Every generational difference is cultivated by the generations preceding them.

Since the advent of TV, each generation is shaped by pop culture influences, based on the notions of an older generation of producers.

Today's attention whoring started many decades ago. Today's curmudgeons that bitch about it conveneniently forget how their generation contributed to it.

Yeah, she's going either/or. It's rarely that black and white.
