So, I have a friend on Facebook who is always taking pictures with homeless people he gives money to. He always captions the pictures with some biblical quote and talks down to people who don't serve the homeless.

Do you give homeless people money?

I go buy either Night Train or Thunderbird and hand that off directly. It's usually better received than money or food.

If I have change I will give it to them, even though most of the time if you give actual change they get mad

I do, but ONLY if there is a crowd around and I can make a big show of it. I mean, if you aren't gonna impress people why lose the 87 cents?

I don't give them shite. I give money once a year to St. Jude and that takes care of any and all charity that I give. That money goes to a great cause and I know it's spent wisely.

I do not. And for good reason.

When people give money to panhandlers - even though it may make them feel good - they are only perpetuating the problem.

There's an old economic saying about curbing and promoting activity. If you want to encourage an activity, subsidize it. If you want to discourage an activity, tax it.

By giving money to panhandlers, you are subsidizing them and giving them an incentive to keep doing it. This drives people who work in social services crazy. If people keep giving panhandlers money, then those panhandlers have no incentive to rely on the social services which are designed to help them break addiction, find employment, etc.

Bought into a guys story and gave him some money only to find out he was telling the same story to multiple different people weeks later.

From that point on i stopped giving money to all panhandlers. Maybe the real beggars can form a union and ward off all the fake beggars that are just scamming people.

Don't confuse people holding up signs begging for money with homeless people.

I will if their schtick is good enough. My wife will if they admit it is for alcohol.

quote:

Then they will be begging for union dues, and I am adamantly against unions.
