Do fewer people go to high school basketball and football games than in years past?

I see clips of LSU commits/recruits (and others) on social media occasionally and the gym or stadium usually looks pretty empty. Our gym and bleachers were rarely, if ever, fully packed, but they were never as empty as I am seeing on social media.

OTers who actually go to games, is this the case? I kind of feel bad for kids now. Our high school basketball games always had a pretty big student section that would stand the entire game and got pretty loud. Sucks they are playing in empty gyms now.

The gyms may not be as full, but at least a good amount of people have the option to work from home remotely.

I can only speak to my hometown and my kids’ school, but the crowds at both football and basketball games are still quite large.

Hmm…some of it might be how much they charge to get into games, and how you have to pay. This last football season they quit taking cash at games, so now that 14 year old kid needs a debit or credit card to get in the gate. It was the dumbest thing I’ve seen from a business perspective in a long time.

I only recall filled seats for bigger games and/or winning seasons. Most midweek basketball games were not well attended. Friday nights football depended on weather, other team, and where it was played. Olympia stadium, warm fall evening, top 4A rival school at the time, it would be packed.

Totally agree. Our gym used to be filled until about 5 years ago. Now it's barely 1/4 full. Prices to get in have doubled and they just don't get student support that they should.

I occasionally attend the private school games in our area and they are in the same boat.

The schools with good football teams have a decent amount of people at every game

I was in high school when COD on xbox live was very popular and the chat was the final frontier of free speech. This isn't the answer.

yeah, some midweek games could be pretty dead but a friday night vs a rival would be pretty packed and a good environment every time.

This and also alot of high school games are streamed or radio so I’m sure that effects attendance somewhat

Charging students to go to games is absurd.
