In LA, you are required to have a personal liquor license to sell alcohol at any type of establishment. I was a bartender in Baton Rouge and in New Orleans for 6 years.

actually, most states only allow liquor to be sold in liquor stores...Louisiana is one of the rare states that pretty much allow it to be sold anywhere.

I don't know. Seems like the control states are in the minority now.

Have to have a liquor license. Cashier with license can sell even if under 21.

In LA any cashier over 18 can check out booze.

Unless the cashier is the owner of the business, he cannot sell you alcohol without a Responsible Vendor Server's Permit plus any local ordinances.

In Texas, you need a TABC seller/server license to be a bartender or cashier in a restaurant/store that sells alcohol for on or off premise consumption.

From ATC site.
Q: What is the minimum age to sell or serve alcoholic beverages?

A: The minimum age to prepare, sell or serve alcoholic beverages in a bar or restaurant is 18 years.

Persons under the age of 18 years are allowed to sell or serve alcoholic beverages, under immediate supervision, in a package store (where the sale or handling of alcoholic beverages does not constitute the main business). However, the employer must fill out an “Application to Employ Minors Under 18” form and return it to the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

I've on multiple occasions had a cashier grab a manager to ring up liquor, old and young. I think it's one of those things where sometimes management will say screw it out of convenience but be breaking the law. I think it's stupid as hell. City cops used to bust a restaurant about once a month for servers not having the ABC card or whatever it was. Just a money grab and screwing over the few people that can't afford to take the hit. Several managers would pay the tickets for their employees.

The answer to what you're trying to ask is yes, though technically it's a bar card, not a liquor license (the business itself has the liquor license). Anyone ringing up alcohol or tobacco is required to have Responsible Vendors Server Card, commonly called a bar card. I am not fully convinced every place actually does that, though.

Louisiana ATC Responsible Vendors Info

quote:

Responsible Vendor Servers

According to Louisiana law “any employee of a vendor who is authorized to sell or serve alcoholic beverages or tobacco products in the normal course of his or her employment or deals with customers who purchase or consume alcoholic beverages or tobacco products” must attend an RV Class and obtain an RV Server Permit within 45 days of their hire date. RV Classes are held on a regular basis throughout the state and are provided to individuals for a fee of $25 per person. The classes average 2 ½ - 3 hours and include a test which must be passed in order to receive your Responsible Vendor Server Card. Our website features a list of all of the RV Classes being offered statewide so that you can easily find and schedule an RV Class.

They need to take a class and get a liquor license.
If they sell to an underage person both them
and the manager can go to jail.

My cousin owns a few convience stores and the says ATC seems to make surprise checks on Friday evening. One time they sent a young lady in and her picture looked like a big doll on her license.

Shreveport and Bossier have local requirements that persons who sell alcohol to get an Alcoholic Beverage Operator (ABO) Card. $50 or so for 2 or 3 years. I think they take a class. Must be 18.

All us boozers up here are familiar with the cry, "ABO on register 4!" that you hear when your cashier lacks a card and has to summon someone else to scan your brew.

If multiple registers are open, I ask them if they have their ABO before I start checking out with them.

I've lived in NY , TN and FL and none of the three allow liquor to be purchased in a grocery store. Beer , yes , liquor no. FL and (just recently TN) allow wine to be sold in grocery stores but again , no liquor.
