I don't see where anyone is the bad guy here. They are giving people a choice.

I firmly believe that WFH during Covid caused a major, unforeseen (by companies) shift in a lot of folks thoughts on corporate work. Working from home made a lot of folks realize that slaving away in a shithole cube surrounded by people you really don't truly like in an attempt to climb the corporate ladder was not all it was cracked up to be. Companies are really pushing return to office now in an attempt to get that leverage of control back.

Can't wait for all the work from homers to come in this thread at 10 AM on a Tuesday and argue with strangers on the internet for 3 or 4 hours avout how much more productive they are working from home.

If it makes you feel better I'd do the same if I was working from an office

This is the thread where all the people that are productive in WFH don't realize that many people are NOT productive and you simply can't only hire productive WFH people at a large company like Dell.

39 days a quarter seems like a solid policy actually. You could just work your 39 days in a row and then go work remote. 3 guys could share a flat together and each of them work remote for a month or so at a time.

Why pick such a shitty career in the first place?

For most professional jobs where you work with a team, being in an office together is almost always better in the long run.

I work from the office and work from home the same amount of time. I'm way more productive from home. Less distractions, don't have to deal with morons at the office, don't have to deal with looking presentable and following social norms. To counter GoTigers23's gotcha.. I'm not working today.

yeah I do a bit of a hybrid, more in office than home but can guarantee I get more done in less time from home for the reasons above.

Now if you don't have self discipline or know you can get away with doing the bare minimum from home, I can see how its a problem...this also probably has more to do with wasted office space across the country some of these larger corps have

Not that it matters in this case, but I haven't been a fan of Dell since 2008 when they backordered a laptop I had already paid for and tried to put a 90 day hold on the money I paid them.

That was my first experience with berating a customer service representative and his manager. They released the hold by the end of business that day.

Honestly if you're in a good spot in your career, you make enough money, while having zero desire to move into upper management type roles. That could probably be a really sweet deal.

Yep, and because they themselves are undisciplined and unmotivated, they assume that all of must be as lazy as they are… The truth is, we are not the same .. many of us are self-directed and can handle the autonomy and freedom that comes with remote work, and we actually thrive on it .

This is dumb. Its just delaying the inventible. If you want people to come back to the office, make them come back to the office without the option to work remote.

Disagree. Some jobs can be done remotely, this is saying you can do those jobs remotely but you won’t be promoted. I think a lot of folks will opt to do this, honestly.

Smart way to reduce number of employees without announcing a lay off.

which is why this is dumb

so now I have to give the guy that I have to micromanage to make sure he is productive the promotion because he comes into the office, but the guy that can be productive without micromanaging is going to leave for a new company?

cool

What was that rant on How I Met Your Mother where the Goliath Bank guy went on and on about how he didn’t want workers to remember they had a life outside their building? Yeah that’s all this is about.

Sounds like you think these sanctions are a little.........

...draconian.

Being able to accomplish your assigned workload doesn't mean you could lead people out of a cardboard box.

Maybe in some industries, but not all, as long as there are metrics in place to assess performance and productivity in leading a team or operation.

I am not saying it is always achievable, perfect or desirable in every situation, but your original statement was more blanketed that it couldn’t or shouldn’t be done and that just isn’t aligned with how the business world is working.

No, there is rampant 'double-dipping' going on right now with remote workers. Particularly in the IT work-space.

People are getting multiple work-from-home IT jobs, barely performing at any of them but drawing full salaries and benefits from each.
