I work in IT and feel strongly that WFH is wonderful for people in my career.
Most IT Infrastructure is cloud based or remotely accessible. There’s no reason at all for having to sit in a cube when you can have your own office, play your own music, and let your dog out whenever needed.

Heck, my boss is based out of Georgia and has been fantastic. Allowing WFH gives your company access to talent they would not normally get from the local pool especially in high demand fields

Do you think drug testing, background checks, etc. are for everyone also?

Nobody is forcing you to stay with the company you are with. If they make rules that you do not want to follow then quit and go somewhere else.

We are scattered all over the place at this point. I work with plenty of people that don't live anywhere near the office these days.

The entire work from home option really depends on your profession.
My entire team is remote, productivity has gone up, and they are based all over the US and Canada.
Obviously the profession matters, but assuming that being in the office equals better productivity is just BS.
The last company that I worked for that tried to eliminate work from home options saw a decrease in morale and a decrease in interest for job positions. Not to mention the amount of people that went somewhere else.
Being in the office is just a backwards way of thinking in the current age of technology that can monitor KPIs, Active Screen time, and more.
Again, depends on the profession, but these companies eliminating the option or putting restrictions in place is just the sign of some VP or Director trying to make their mark with BS policies.

Well we know that wfh productivity is down. So if you are saying the reasons is that those those who self select into wfh are those that are going to be less productive regardless of office or wfh, it seems this policy is perfect.

Thoughts from boomer / long-time IT manager fixing to retire:
- Yes, Dell has ballz (and should be admired) for explicitly stating their policy.
-- They will lose some folks, no question, for going to a three-DAW policy
- I know of a large financial institution that did nearly the same thing except more strict: they stated everyone must do three days a week.
-- Well, you ask, what about all the folks hired during COVID that were flung far and wide? Tough shite, they said, they must move closer and do the 3 DAW. They have lost a chunk of foks, but oh well. But not surprising from this Co that has an aggressive performance management approach that trims the fat every year.
- The Fortune 100 co I work for now requires 2 DAW EXCEPT for Technology non-management. So I'm supposed to go in but nobody on my teams have to. Our CIO knows we'll take a huge hit.
- As for the point about not being able to exhibit leadership remotely, that's BS. We seen numerous cases since COVID where leaders emerged. Sure, it's more difficult, but possible.

The SO is IT and was doing almost completely WFH long before COVID (went into the office once a week to see vendors).
He's got guys on his team as far away as South America. His company tried to do a big push back to in-person at least 3 days a week and there was pretty much a mutiny. They ended up reassigning a bunch of guys as fully remote to avoid a mass exodus of employees in their department (IT security).

We can't compete for employees anymore without at least offering some sort of hybrid setup. Remote or hybrid is pretty much the norm now in IT.

No, there is rampant 'double-dipping' going on right now with remote workers. Particularly in the IT work-space.
People are getting multiple work-from-home IT jobs, barely performing at any of them but drawing full salaries and benefits from each.
There was a time when that scenario drew admiration from others.
