You are not allowed to judge someone based on their job/title if that is what the economy is showing as the prominent profession.

Trade schools/trade jobs are on the up and up. A degree is worth nothing nowadays in many disciplines unless you have a major and preferably a masters.

You cannot be worried about their well-being when he is on the right path. Sure, you can ask about his goals/aspirations in his career, but he is doing things right for right now.

Gotcha. I understood that he called to ask and the FIL said let's have lunch to discuss.

Nevermind.

if he's man enough to look you in the eye, shake your hand and actually ask for your blessing... seems like a good guy.

she could probably do worse.

just a formality anymore, if they're going to do it(and they're already doing it,) they're going to do it

It could be worse. She could had gotten knocked up at 16 by some loser that lives in your trailer park and now you're having to raise her bastard son while she's finishing up her GED.

I do believe this is a real love and they both would do anything for each other. My only hesitation is that he is not in school and I don't really see any future career path for him. Guess I'm just trying to save my daughter from a financially insecure future.

He works out of town a lot and called me tonight see if we could meet to talk. I asked was it about my daughter and he said yes he was going to propose to her.

Dude told you he was going to propose to your daughter over the phone? Frankly, I'd have hesitations as well. Anybody that asks my permission to marry my daughter via telephone will not get my blessing.

sorry, "about five years since 11th grade" is just a strange term to use as a measuring stick

He just left out a comma, you half-wit. He's saying they've been dating for 5 years, since 11th grade. In other words, they started dating her junior year of high school, which was 5 years ago. Really not that complicated.

As long as he makes a good living, loves her, and treats her with respect, shouldn't be an issue. If you raised her right, and she wants to marry him for all the right reasons, then it's all you can ask for.

Call me old fashion, but I'd like to look the man in the eye that asks me for my daughters hand in marriage.

As Charles Barkley so famously put it when asked how he would handle that situation: " I'll kill the first one to ask & word will get around". But, as well, do understand that the lad will be nervous as hell, so cut him some slack when talking.
