$130K base is plenty in San Jose. Obviously you're not going to own a home but that is plenty to have a comfortable living situation.

Move to CA. I can’t imagine it would be some big regret, even if it didn’t go great.

What sector of the oilfield?
I envision drilling/service in a lot of pain for a long time. Midstream a good bit safer but no boom. The refiners and chemical companies will recover this year or early next.
But this industry has sent so much work out of the country and moved corporate offices. We may never see the 2007/2014 days again.
If I get a chance to get out, I may take it.

I love how idiots on here who likely never been out of their home state know what's enough to live another state. For a single guy making 130k is more than enough. You could easily save 40-50k if you live a moderate life style. I suggest you take that job, stay there a couple years, save your money then move back.

I live out here just north of San Jose. Moved here from BR. But with family so different housing needs/priorities.
What city is the job in?
Are you getting relocation assistance?
Base salary of 130k. What is target bonus? Stock/option package?
What do you like to do besides work? Fish/hunt/ski/hike/surf, etc?
But if your home can be sold and cover the deposit, you are on the way to adding equity value yearly. And plenty opportunities once you are here. Or rent a year and get to know the area.
Real estate prices are gated on public school quality and commute options.
Houses in good schools sell in 3 weeks or less. Not sure about other areas. But the point is, IF you decide to buy, it will not stay on the market like houses in Louisiana tend to do. Completely different market out here.
Hardest part is making the move.

I moved from BR to Seattle a little over 4 years ago to make a career change and land in my desired retirement region. I spent a year in a 500 sq ft studio apt, which was a big change from my 4 br house in BR, but I absolutely loved it! There were more than 50 restaurants within a mile and my job was only a 10 min bus ride away. After my wife shut down her business in BR, we bought another 4 br house on an acre outside of Seattle. Dude, this was literally me 10 years ago when I left the South to come live in the Bay Area. It is the best decision I've ever made in my life. I was like you when I first moved out here and thought I'll never be able to afford the cost of living here.
Fast forward 10 years, wife and I have two kids, we own two homes (both within 10 miles of San Jose) and I make 3 times as much as I made back in Texas (I'm not saying this to brag, but just want to highlight the opportunities that are out here for career growth). My wife works too and makes as much as me, which certainly helps us afford a comfortable life style.
Don't let people here discourage you from moving here due to the liberal politics or the high cost of living or the high taxes. In the long run there is no place like the Bay Area to create personal wealth, high costs not withstanding. I'd have never dreamt that any of this would be possible 10 years ago when I was contemplating the move out here, but here we are. Will I retire in the Bay Area? Probably not. But there is no other place I'd rather spend my prime working years, or at least a significant portion of it.
I can almost guarantee you, you'll not regret moving out here. $130K will seem low for now (my first job out here I made $103K), but I work at a FAANG now and will be willing to refer you in a couple of years once you settle down and are ready to make a change, which can considerably increase your compensation. Based on this I would say you should move and try it. It's a low risk proposition. Not only could you always move back, but if you are in tech you will be coming back with more panache on your resume if it has silicon valley on it.

Depending on where in SJ the business is even 2 hours is a stretch until you save up a nice down payment. You can find little enclaves fo McMansions for around $450k but they're isolated and have high HOA fees, like this one, or maybe a rugged house out in the woods that is only an hour away.
You may want to just consider this as a temporary adventure of sorts and just plan to rent.

Sounds like a dream situation. I’m in O&G in Oklahoma, so escaping to San Jose with a 130k salary would be a no brainer for me.

True story: I have been across the Golden Gate Bridge 4 times and I have never actually really SEEN it. It was especially foggy the week I was visiting my buddy. I caught a glimpse of the giant suspension cables once or twice and I could kind of tell when we were near the towers, but as far as seeing the bridge? Not really.
