I had a small manual labor project in my backyard I didn't have time to do, so I hired a couple folks from lowes. Wow.....those guys worked faster than I thought humanly possible.

Did you pay them by the hour or by the job? Going rate?

Paid by the job. That's why they bust their asses so hard. When I hired them, there was a 'bossman' who handled the negotiating and you haggled with him. I don't know the going rate, but like I said, I had a 26' truck unloaded and furniture placed for $200.

Not sure how they could quote it by the job until they saw everything I wanted done. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

True. I showed up in the truck and showed them how much was in it.

I hire them from halfway houses. No lie.

Was just coming to post this. My mother used to run the kitchen in the Covington jail. When the workers would get in the halfway house she'd tell me who the good ones were and I'd employ them in our restaurants.

What about an LSU student? Is there an official site where students post requests for work? Surely there are plenty of guys looking for some beer money this weekend...but they're probably sleeping until noon.

Again...no gay stuff...legit yard work.

Good idea but I live in a small neighborhood and there no guys in the right age bracket. Outside of my 'hood, it gets shady (BTR).

Good advice but that will cost me twice as much and take too long to set up.

Some idiot getting hurt on your property without insurance could cost you a lot more. I think I pay $15 an hour when I need help thru a temp service (used a couple last month).

It usually only takes an hour or so to get someone from a temp service. And, they work on weekends.

Your posts are hilarious taken out of context. Good luck finding some guys in the right age bracket!

Update...

I went to HD on Coursey to hire a couple of guys that looked like they wanted to work. I get them back to the house and show them what I needed done. I would estimate that the job would take them roughly 3 hours...maybe 4 due to the time of day and the heat...to complete. The first hour would be cutting grass (on a ZTR) and weedeating. The next 2 or 3 hours would be pulling weeds. I offered them $100/piece and they declined. They wanted $150/person. I just couldn't bring myself to pay $300 to have weeds pulled so I had to suck it up and do it myself. It sucked, I'm not going to lie, but is the going rate for that type of work really approaching $50/hour? To me, it sounds like they just didn't want to pull weeds. I told them before we left the parking lot that is what the biggest part of the job was so I'm not sure what changed their mind.

you're doing it wrong. you should have explained and gotten several folks at HD bidding on it and gotten a better rate.

sounds like you didn't really explain the job or you didn't ask them their hourly rate first.
