I did ask for their hourly rate and he said they quote by the job only. I had another 2 guys considering it but they never committed and they didn't want to drive to my house to look at the project. I guess pulling weeds is frowned upon amongst that group.

try a local tacqueria instead.

seriously. we made friends with the owner and he hooked us up with several groups who are more than happy to do work.

eta we had 2 guys retile our shower. we bought a couple hundred dollars worth of subway tile & $100 worth of 'river rock' tile for the flooring & grout and they wanted $400 to re tile.

turned out the previous owner failed to waterproof it, so i bought another $200 or so worth of backerboard & cinder blocks (for the bench) and they ended up charging $800 total for labor.

it looks great, its completely solid and it took them probably 2-3 days total to complete the work including ripping out the old tile & installing the waterproof walls.

not bad considering i had quotes as high as $10,000 from 'legitimate' tile companies.

Not a bad idea. I haven't heard that suggestion before.

Pretty crazy. Every time I've done it I pull off to the side where they congregate, hold up how many workers I need, they race each other to see who gets to the truck first, and that's most of the negotiation. I may tell them what they're doing, and I may indicate how much I'm planning to pay, but they've never even tried to negotiate at all. I do pay pretty fairly (generously, really), but nothing crazy.

this is in nashville, well actually franklin.

the key is to find an AUTHENTIC tacqueria..the one where all the day laborers hang out..not some hipster place posing as a taco stand.

Maybe take pics and show them what needs to be done.

I'm very surprised they turned down that job for 150/each.

I bet if they had a trailer with lawn equipment, they would've taken the job.

My brother in Houston has mexicans cutting/edging his house for $25.

Well they did that when I pulled up too (which was right behind the taco truck parked in the gas station next door). But, only 2 guys were negotiating back and forth. The rest of them just stood there and smiled.

I may try again in a couple of weeks when I want the beds cleaned up again. That damn nutsedge and torpedo grass sucks!

No, they didn't turn it down at $150/person. That is what they were asking for. I was offering $100/person.

I had all of the equipment they needed (riding ZTR, gas weedeater and gas blower). All they had to do was crank it up and go.

you could have hired a legit lawn service to do this for less than $200 and they would have used their own equipment

I was short on time. I wanted it done Saturday. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I had a legit lawn service coming once a month but I never knew when they would actually show up and I wasn't happy with the work they provided. So, I decided to go another route. I will probably hire a different company to come twice a month until I get this nutsedge under control (I think I am SOL on the torpedo grass).

yeah, way too high.

the mexicans show up at my house, team of 3 typically, with their own tools.

they cut the yard (1/2 acre on a hill at least), get into the pool area and weed all the ground cover.

takes maybe an hour..i pay them $50 straight.
