New house and have to purchase a fridge. Apparently standard fridges stick out up to 9 inches from the cabinets and looks awkward. Same brand/style fridge as counter depth is nearly a $500 difference and will make the SO happy but I'm OT poor and think the money is better spent elsewhere. What does the OT think?

Is it wider or do you get less fridge for that extra $500?

They hold a lot less too. People do pay a premium for them. Most Subzero and Viking fridges are naturally counter depth.

All appliances now are bought for appearance first, function second. You have to think 95% of all fridges are standard depth, so it's not like people will come over and point.

Fridges are a waste of money. Got rid of mine weeks ago, and never have I looked back.

Depends on where it is going to be. Mine has cabinets on both sides in a galley style kitchen. I couldn't use a standard depth without sticking out in the walkway.

When I went counter depth I also went wider. But a standard counter depth is going to hold two less cans per row on a shelf.

So standard depth.

I had to buy a counter depth for my new house for the same reasons. But I also kept my old fridge and put it in the garage. That's where the beer is.

Less fridge space means less freezer space.

How many of y'all are living out of the fridge?

If I were buying appliances for a house, I'd buy a fridge with no freezer and a separate stand alone freezer for the garage or utility room.

I think the best combo one can get is the stand alone Frigidaire fridge and freezer. They are actually priced really well and end up cheaper than many french door fridges for the set. Also they are based on the classic Frigidaire design. At worst the $125 control board will pop. Much better that the problems you can get with a GE or LG and Samsung. Hell LG now uses a new compressor technology they are not sharing with non certified techs. So very few will be able to work on new LG fridges with the linear compressors.

Stand alone fridge is a smart buy, but you lose your icemaker.
(unless the stand alone freezer is next to it)

Thanks for the info guys. I'll probably end up just getting the counter depth because it's just us two and space isn't a huge factor (at least for a few years). Will look into the frigidaire brand. The location of the fridge is on the right side of the island. $500 doesn't seem like a whole lot when I factor in the thought that the SO will point out the other every time we are in the kitchen.

We bought a counter-depth when we moved into our new house. I too was worried about space. We are a family of four and think our fridge is well stocked and have never felt like I needed a bigger fridge.

My fridge is near the island too. The few extra inches definitely make a difference (TWSS)

Dude when you stick the regular sized one in there and look at how ridiculous it looks you'll be embarrassed that you started this thread.

We built new in 2013 and after our closing went to Lowe's and picked out a stainless double door. On sale, with an extra 15% off, we had a deal on our hands. Then we realized we had counter depth cabinets. Went back, measured to confirm and then went back to Lowe's.

The EXACT same model (only smaller) was $1,000 more. So what did we do? What could we do...we left, went to HH Greg and I bargained them down on a Stainless Samsung Counter Depth almost the same amount.

But bottom line, do NOT try and jam a regular fridge in there. It's going to look ridiculous. Also, re: size...yes there is a difference but our Samsung is actually way bigger than we realized. The doors can hold multiple gallon jugs and liter bottles. Size concern is overblown.

Just my $0.02. Spend the $500 and don't be so damn cheap....

I do not like them, obviously, they are smaller than a regular refrigerator.

I'm the wife and personally I go for function rather than look. With a family of 5, I can't afford to give up space in the fridge. That said, ours is NOT counter depth but it's against a wall so the "sticking out" doesn't look bad and nothing else would have fit there width wise to make up for the depth.

I sort of wanted a French door fridge with freezer at the bottom but I wanted other new things as well in our home so we opted for side by side and saved a pretty nice chunk of money for elsewhere.
