Students in Alabama will be required to learn about climate change and evolution for the first time next year, after officials announced an overhaul of the state's science education standards.

Until now, teachers in the state weren't required to teach climate change, evolution and other locally controversial topics. Textbooks used in Alabama science classes have for years carried disclaimer stickers stating that evolution is a "controversial theory," not fact. The new course of study, announced on Thursday, doesn't eliminate those warnings, which were originally advocated by Christian conservatives.

The new curriculum will help improve scientific literacy in the state, where only 21 percent of 10th-graders meet or exceed national science testing standards. Alabama ranked 37th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in average ACT science scores last year.

Good. Whether you believe it or not, learning opposing arguments does nothing but give people perspective, and increase overall intelligence.

Bad news....teaching these concepts isn't going to make this mouth-breathing state any smarter....

Will only give us something else to bitch about.

Global warming until they get a cool snap, then you call it climate change..... Hopefully these kids have enough common sense to call it the great globalwarming hoax/money grab of the 2000's.

Evolution is taught in most schools around the country, and it has been for a while now.

They'll have to teach Darwinist evolution without the support of the scientific method.

You say that like it's a good thing.

Look if you want to believe in science in your home then that's fine, to an extent. But your science has no business in a public school. Your beliefs in theories and witchcraft shouldn't hinder my children's ability to learn.

So they can learn alternate theories about where humans came from, but cannot teach where they actually came from? That makes sense.

How about we put God back in schools so they can start excelling again.

Removing God from schools was the worse thing to ever happen to the school system in this country and the test scores and behaviors show it.

Teach science in schools and theology in Sunday school. I can't believe it's 2015 and this is going on.

Maybe they should just start with math and English then go from there.

I didn't realize they kept records of standardized test scores from the pre-Civil War era

Man made climate change? Or just climate change?

One is real, and we can't do anything about the other one.
