Why? Every kid should have a .22 or .410. Teach them safety when they are young, no problems when they are older.

After reading all the posts about age of children and atvs I was wondering what age is to young to buy your child a rifle or shotgun

There's a difference between getting your kid a gun at 8, and letting your kid at 8 take their gun off into the woods with their 3 8 year old friends by themselves. That's the big difference.
Same thing with kids and ATVs/ motorcycles. It is one thing to let them have one and ride it at a course or with you while you are riding, its another thing to let them go off into the woods on their own with friends with it.
I got a BB gun at 5 and my parents would let me take it off by myself probably at 7-8. But I wasn't allowed to take a gun on my own until HS.

Nice. Would have liked to seen 12 year old 02 try and shoot that thing tho.

My first rifle was a .243, that papa gave to daddy and daddy gave to me. They taught me how to shoot with a steady hand

Yeah, they probably could have went with a 20 gauge or something but my uncle was selling it and I needed a gun for deer hunting. Killed my first couple of deer with that gun until I bought my first rifle.

I wouldn't expect much different than this from a dumbass like him, if you've seen his posts.

I had "my" gun at 5 or 6. Didn't get to take it anywhere on my own or shoot by myself until I could drive.

I bought my son a T/C Hot-shot (single shot .22) when he was 3. That does not mean that he ever saw it unless I got it out to go shoot. When he was 9 he got a Franchise Affinity Compact .20. Again he doesn't see it unless I'm here. This past year do for dove season he was able to load one shell at a time and was beside me the whole time. As he gets older and is able to show me he's responsible enough to use it safely then I'll cut him a little slack and give him a slightly longer leash.

reminds me of the one about the youngster that shot a man in the rifle range with an AR15.

No reason to have a gun when they're older either. Greatly increases your chance of being killed by a firearm
Posted on 2/6/17 at 5:43 pm to Grim
so you think no one should have a firearm?
Posted on 2/6/17 at 5:44 pm to auburntiger4life
It depends on the kid, but in Louisiana, they should have a CCL by first grade.

My daughter got her .22 cricket at 5 and has been shooting it for 2 yrs now. She OCD when it comes to handling and how to treat a gun now. It teaches them a lot of responsibility, and respect of life when taught correctly.
She went hunting with me for the first time this year. When she saw what a gun can do it made her even more aware of things.

Each kid is going to be different because you may have a 6 year old thats more responsible with a gun in their hands than a 13 year old.
But any younger than 10 and I'd start them off with a Daisy BB gun, mainly to teach and make sure they understand basic safety concepts before giving them a .22
