It's a judgement call. If you think your child is too immature to handle the responsibility then don't buy it for them.

There is no standard age where children become trustworthy.

Mine were around 12 for one that was theirs. They shot much younger 4 or 5.

Each child is different IMO.

I'm still not sure my 20yo brother is safe with a firearm.

We're talking about a gun that will strictly be used with the parent around...correct?

If so, then I'd say 6 - 7.

No reason for any child to have a gun

I have two boys 7 and 9 they both now have a 410 and 22 singleshot, I also truly believe the responsibility is the most important part of it

I bought my daughter a pink .22 short rifle when she turned 5. Obviously only shot and handled it when I was there. Slowly bought and shot other guns from about 7 years old on. She shot her first animal, alligator at about 7. She's 14 now and has shot 5 deer and about 30 more gators. Her actually starting young and seeing that a gun kills has made her the safest kid around guns. My opinion is if you "keep guns secret" or foreign to a kid that's very dangerous.

My daughter turns 10 in March and that is when I will teach her to shoot a .22 rifle. She wanted to shoot it when she was 7.
