1. Did not know independent marathon-running investigators existed

it's really just people on running forums doing some amateur sleuthing. they're usually looking for people cheating on marathon times in order to qualify for boston.

lesson to learn here is if you're going to cut a course, don't wear a watch that automatically uploads your gps position and stats to a public profile.

Good lord. People are so damn serious about running a stupid race?

Man, you don't even know the half of it. I read another message board sometimes that is dedicated to triathlon. If they hear about a really impressive time at a race from someone they've never heard of or that they can't find race results where that person was nearly that fast before, then it's a witch hunt. 50 page threads. They've gotten people DQ'd with no actual evidence other than data showing the person has never been that fast before. These are people not even participating in that race. Last one was afemale age group swimmer in New Zealand who kept up with the tail end of the pro males. Even though she was a D1 swimmer, they crucified her to the point that New Zealand Triple eventually investigated and DQ'd for cutting the course (I think she had no proof she did the whole course, but they didn't have proof she didn).

You can cheat if you really suck. But don't put up a respectable time and not expect someone with a similar result to say, "I never saw that guy, we should look into this".

I'm a competitive bike racer and I can say, triathletes are the glue eating introverted weirdos of the sports world. They are the round peg in a world of square holes. I can totally see them doing this.

All that aside, frick cheaters.

I fully expected this to be a story about some woman who cheated on her husband and was undone by her GPS showing a pit stop where the transgressions occurred. It never crossed my mind this would be about someone actually cheating the race.

This. It's far too easy to check historical times for anyone that is competitive in their age group, much less someone who finishes second in their gender.
