Municipal utility EPB Fiber Optics announced that it's now offering 10Gbps broadband Internet service to any Chattanooga, Tennessee resident who wants it, provided they pay the asking price.
The new speed option runs $299 per month and includes free installation. There's no contract to sign and no cancellation fee if residents ultimately decide that 10Gbps is too rich for their blood.
"Five years ago, Chattanooga and Hamilton County became the first in the United States to offer up to 1Gbps Internet speeds," said Harold DePriest, president and CEO of EPB. "Today, we become the first community in the world capable of delivering up to 10Gbps to all 170,000 households and businesses in our service area."
Comcast sued EPB in 2008 in an attempt to block it from building out its fiber network. The court sided with EPB and Comcast went on to upgrade its own infrastructure in order to remain competitive. According to Ars Technica, Comcast announced earlier this year that it would offer 2Gbps to Chattanooga residents, which costs $300 per month, plus up to $500 for installation and up to another $500 for activation. More recently, it announced a $159/month promotional price in Chattanooga and other cities that's good for three years.
quote:
"Chattanooga’s 10Gbps fiber optic network is a world-class platform for innovation," DePriest added. "In recent years, the need for faster Internet speeds has increased rapidly. Chattanooga is the perfect place for companies to enhance their productivity today and test the applications everyone in the country will want tomorrow."
Gig City!

It's high for sure, but it's a start and it will come down. I would be happy with just a few hundred Mbs.

So it seems Socialism is a good thing for internet speeds.
Though Google's model of cheap service with embedded ads will probably knock everyone out of the game when they come around nationally.

I don't know how useful this is. We have fiber internet at work and 1gig network cards in our PCs. We have a dedicated pipe from our core routers to a datacenter in Colorado and I can get 150mb/sec from my PC (and around 800 from a server) and these numbers resemble what i get on speed tests to the internet.
However, most regular sites on the internet I rarely get more than 50mb/sec. Usually less. This is really only useful for businesses that have a lot of different people using the internet at once or for people and especially startups who want to host their own servers. It won't even really help you with connections to the cloud, since most of the big providers will see your NAT'd external IP for everyone in your office so you'll be throttled by their network to around 100mb/sec in most cases.
TL;DR: these numbers are useless for most home users.

Completely useless for consumers

Yep you won't see me complaining. I would definitely go for the 1 Gig option if I lived in Chattanooga, but we see case in point what some good competition can do for the industry. Comcast is being forced to compete with them and hopefully we see more cities following suit soon. Although AT&T, Comcast and the like are deep in some pockets of representatives standing in the way of competition in many places, including my area.

We have that here but is for businesses and it goes for about the same price. I would like to hook my Xbox up and try my Xbox live and do some call of duty. I bet I would piss some people off

It wouldn't do anything for your gaming.

Sued them for making too good of a product that their shitty company wouldn't be able to compete with? What kind of bull shite is this?
Anyway, I probably would have absolutely no use with that kind of speed. I don't even know what the practical application is for it.

It is true, even 4k Streaming is easily done with under 100 Mb/s. There's not a whole lot of practical consumer application to this, but at least it's offered. It's not applicable now, but Chattanooga is just ahead of the curve.

i read an article last week about now municipal fiber has been a failure in the vast majority of markets
chattanooga is one of the exceptions, but a big reason is they got the backbone installed via federal stimulus money
so everyone celebrate. we helped pay for chattanooga to have these speeds

I there is an exclusivity deal to the infrastructure that Comcast and all major cable providers use and Comcast sued when EPB started building the new infrastructure for the fiber network.

I got an email from Cox about my roommate dl'ing a movie last week. Those speeds would for sure cut down on the time they had to track me
You just gotta laugh at Comcast trying to charge people $500 for installation and $500 for activation for a slower speed. That's the way to win customers
