illegal.

In Louisiana, it is illegal to change lanes in an intersection, or within 100 feet of an intersection.

So, you were in the left lane and crossed the right lane to turn right? Sounds like you "changed" lanes in an intersection too. sounds like they could have changed lanes before the intersection too if they were coming from behind you considering you were turning right and probably not very far into the intersection yourself.

I thought it was illegal to change within 100 ft of an intersection in all 50 states +DC. At least that's what we learned in Drivers' Ed, 20+ yrs ago.

I see lots of people saying "but... someone told me this was Illegal".

I haven't seen anyone cite a law stating that changing lanes in an intersection is even remotely close to being illegal. The insurance company is going to win this case, you are going to lose for driving like an a-hole, OP. Deal with it, bro.

No. I was on a side street, turning right (southbound) onto the road the guy was already on. He was in the left lane of that road. The right lane was clear. I'm pretty sure the law against changing lanes in an intersection exists for the exact situation that happened.

No link. But maybe he could call Tracy Wirtz as an expert witness. The trooper told her it was against the law on Good Morning Acadiana.

I Googled it. You're right that it's not illegal. However, as several sites noted, you could be ticketed for an "unsafe lane change," depending on circumstances. Of course, that could apply to any lane change.

I'm shocked that you weren't ticketed for failure to yield the right of way

Progressive pays their own claims eagerly and without hesitation. They just don't pay others.

Illegal within 200feet of an intersection. Was riding in a car that got ticketed for this about 10 years ago.

Medford PD detectives would put a bullet in your head for such acts.

If you're in an intersection where there usually aren't any lines you can't change lanes. Outside of that there will be lines. If they are dashed lines you can change lanes no matter the distance from intersection as long as you start and finish changing lanes before the dashed lines end.

Ok, got it now. Not sure about the legality of it but seems like Progressive is trying to screw you on this. How bad was the damage to your car?

Well you are 99% wrong. I was in the car with my mother who got a ticket from a Bellaire PD officer in Houston for changing lanes in an intersection. The left lane was left turn only and apparently my other did no catch that until in the intersection. She changed lanes to proceed straight and was written a ticket. Luckily no person or dog was shot.

I was told it was illegal too, here are the state driving laws. I did a quick glance and couldn't find it.

I was always told changing lanes in an intersection can cause accidents. Also you should always get a lawyer when you get in a wreck and this is a reason why. They are supposed to go with the police findings and not their own.
