There will always be speeders. No matter what. People will speed. Air patrols. More units on bridge. It will happen. Limiting those that speed dangerously is what we are discussing here. Air patrol will do that but at a cost. I believe that units driving the bridge would also be effective.

I have driven across the Causeway more times than I can count, and it's rare that I actually see people dangerously speeding. I do, however, see a lot of distracted drivers, as has been mentioned a lot in this thread. That's why more units patrolling and pulling people over for texting/reckless driving would be much more effective for preventing crashes than just flying around looking for speeders. (imo)

Maybe they will install cell phone jammers along the bridge.

A friend of mine used to work for the Causeway. His job was to sit in front of a bank of monitors, observing traffic camera imaging. I think he watched 16 of 48 feeds, but it's been a few years and my figures may be off a bit. He said the the resolution of the cameras was so good that he could tell what brand of beer a driver was drinking, if he zoomed in on an erratic driver.

There were three people who did this all day (not as many at night). It seems like if this monitoring activity is still happening, they ought to be able to catch the idiots who are texting for 24 miles.

And yet that can't find a car that lost a spare tire out of the trunk? (this was at night so maybe that's the reason).

I'm pretty underwhelmed with the Causeway police and their management.

It stands to reason that they would propose the most expensive solution to a problem that could be quickly brought under control using existing resources.

The bridge in Slidell is safer to drive on with the shoulder, but people drive much faster than the speeds on the causeway.

Honestly would be a good idea. Don't know how far the reach is on them though, so they'd probably need a huge amp on each one

I know I cannot drive well at all while texting or emailing, so I use Google voice

What happens when someone needs to call 911?

Emergency calls should make it through. I know my phone goes into 911 mode when I dial it and even turns the GPS on

A cell jammer will be able to filter what number you're calling? This is sounding made up.

I am not sure because I am not a cell phone jammer specialist, but it seems plausible. They could build in some type of programming to use a different frequency when dialing 911 maybe, and then OTA update phones

Yeah, I'm a little skeptical of the existence of this magical bank of super high res cameras that can focus on every car.

Every day I drive the Causeway, I see something that would be easy pickings (distracted driving, unsecured loads, etc) if there was really somebody constantly monitoring this. And those things would do a lot more for public safety than catching a 73 MPHer.

Which costs more? I'm betting having 48 units constantly patrolling does.

In fairness, that's just a number that you're pulling out of your arse.

Cut it in half and it likely still cost more. How many cars do you think is reasonable to achieve what I was responding to?
