They had a photo yesterday of Barcelona playing in an empty stadium, since it was shut down because of the protests.

isn't the Barca and Madrid rivalry steeped in the political differences of the regions?

The basque have put together a ethnic-based soccer team and it was very good. If Catatonia did, it would be flat out stacked.

Spain's economy is worse than France's, this won't end well.

Team Catalan. If 90%+ of the people want to secede they should be able to.

How many of those 90% actually understand what it would mean to secede from Spain tho. I would bet not a lot. I'm not saying which way is the right way but most people have no idea what they'd actually be getting themselves in to.

Maybe they do, maybe they don't but when the number is that high let them take the plunge and see what happens.

You are right that the consequences of independence are not fully understood by all, but I'd imagine seeing police beating and dragging people out of polling stations would be enough to sway on the fence people to the "yes" side.

People want to act like any ethnic or regional group who ever thought about independence should get it, as if things would stay the same or be better than before and there'd be no big brother to tell them what to do.

They're wrong.

It gets glossed over a lot in the history books, but after our glorious American Revolution we STRUGGLED as a nation for a good while. We had little industry, resources, or even labor to rectify the first two.

There's a reason why people grouped together to form larger nations. Pooling resources makes the sum greater than the parts and capable of achieving so much more. This is why every group can't be independent.

But it turned out well for us in the end.

It was a rather special case. We had major influxes of cheap labor over time and were able to greatly expand our territory due to a complete lack of regional rivals. Most people wouldn't have been able to do that.

Basically, imagine if we had never been able to grow any bigger than the East Coast because we had a superpower like....Russia for a neighbor. We would be so insignificant and fricked it wouldn't even be funny. And eventually we would probably just be absorbed by said neighbor.

Small countries only survive due to the patronage of larger countries.

I understand the Spanish government saying the vote is illegal and not recognizing it, but what is the point of bringing the police in? Is Spain thinking that if they use force early to stop the vote, it will save more resources, lives, etc. than if they just let them vote for it without interruption and not recognize it.

Part of the reason the Catalonia's want to succeed is that they are the wealthiest region of Spain (as I understand it) and are therefore taxed the most but the money is used to help fund under developed parts of Spain and they feel that the Spanish government is essentially stealing their money and paying for the welfare systems of the poor people.

That, and they have cultural differences with the rest of Spain. But mostly the money thing.

Well no shite, that's natural. They are being idiots. Even if you are the wealthiest, that doesn't mean you may exist well without the rest of the whole.

That's like New York City trying to secede. You know what the rest of the USA wold do, tax the ever living shite out of any product not made in New York. Corn, wheat, gas, etc. would go through the roof.
