... the McKinley High senior and starting quarterback for the 2016 season was shot in the early hours of Saturday while attending the party a few blocks from his North Baton Rouge home.

"It's a sad situation," said Ken Hilton, head football coach at McKinley. "He was going to graduate in three days with a 3.5 GPA."

I taught him a few years ago for two years. He was one of my favorite students I have ever had. He was smart, hardworking, charismatic, respectful and a natural leader. I was able to be an effective teacher partly due to him. When the other kids would start to act up as I was teaching he'd speak up and tell others to focus and to behave. He made me smile every day, made worth teaching at tough school worth it.

That's a damn shame.

Should rally around him instead of Alton Sterling

What a sad story and shite like this infuriates me since even the good kids have no shot. We NEED more prisons and we NEED to keep violent offenders locked up until they rot. I would bet big money the fricking pieces of shite who did this have lengthy records and have been convicted of violent crimes in the past.

Any community other than the inner city black community would do exactly that. The fact that the adults in their community who are actually contributing members of society even don't get something as simple as this shows how fricked beyond all hope that community is.

How does my first post, the one I am replying to, have 6 downvotes and no upvotes? You guys don't get pissed off that this happens and think we should lock violent criminals away? Am I missing something here?

It is a sad situation and a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to his parents since a parent should never have to bury a child.

Because you are advocating for more prisons which most on here understand we don't need, we need real justice reform. We lock up way too many people and give them a free BA in crime then dump them out on the street and say "now behave yourself". This kids death is tragic but the knee jerk reaction to funnel more money to police and the prison system isn't right either.

I haven't seen him in a few years, so I'm not going to come in here and say that it's not possible that he wasn't involved in some stuff that he shouldn't have been. But as I said he was one of the best kids I ever taught and had a 3.5 gpa. Sure, maybe where you grew up it's not possible, but in N.BR growing up poor, there aren't too many "right places" and "right people". You don't choose your family, and you don't get to choose where you live. And if you are the QB of a HS football team in a bad area I'm sure you have team mates that aren't always up to good. It's plausible that its just a tragic accident.

And having taught at poor inner city schools, sometimes you are targeted for NOT getting in the game.
