My wife is a breast surgeon. Saw 27 patients in clinic yesterday. So many sad stories.

lulz at the downvotes for people who are actually affected by this disease. stay classy

Liver cancer
rare and mostly not curable (therefore low yield to focus resources here)
quote:
ovarian cancer
fairly rare and mostly not curable
quote:
pancreatic cancer
uncommon, almost always fatal, essentially untreatable (same with aggressive brain tumors, btw)
quote:
lung cancer
common but 90% related to smoking and therefore already known to be preventable, some types are curable, mixed bag of drugs/surgery/radiation - lots of research done and ongoing
quote:
Colorectal Cancer
common but >90% already known to be preventable with scopes, excellent prognosis if not metastasized
quote:
prostate
common, most cases manageable with current treatments, but still potentially highly fatal. You have a good point with this one and I totally agree that it is a good place to put more of our resources.
quote:
Breast Cancer
very common, very preventable (through screening), and very treatable. The deaths are relatively low BECAUSE of the resources that get put into it. It makes perfect sense to focus on it.
Deal with it.

My mother and mother-in-law are breast cancer survivors. However, I just lost a good friend to breast cancer. She was in her 50s. Another friend, also in her 50s, died a few years ago.
While I don't agree with or support Susan Komen I have no problem with raising awareness and seeing pink everywhere in October.

Lost my dad 53 days ago to this horrible shite. He lasted 10 months and they found it early but like the say, their is no cure for this. Survival rate is only 20% for the 1st year once you are diagnosed and only 5% after 5 years. Lost my aunt, his sister, to the same thing 5 years ago and she only made it 3 months. Scares the hell out of me because it is hereditary.
I wouldn't wish this shite on my worst enemy

Has it ever occurred to you that the reason it doesn't kill as many people is BECAUSE there is a great fundraising effort?
Please don't interject logic into this stupid fricking discussion, Sir.

One thing to consider is that advances in one form of research can actually benefit others. For example, studies for HEP C drugs revealed applications to cancer treatment. Also, it's pretty common for academic labs to use some of their funding for various side projects. So just because they have a big breast cancer research grant, they may still also apply some of that funding to other related topics.

Thus more money is needed to find better treatments. Most of this shite used to be "mostly not curable." Polio used to be not curable.

the point being resources are best directed where there is the greatest potential of doing the most good for the largest number of people
Resources are not unlimited. Of course wed like to cure every cancer. Ovarian cancer is a horrific nightmare.

I get your point, but it is clear that Breast Cancer gets an "unfair" share of the attention/money because tits while other less sexy disease sites are under funded. Furthermore, Susan G Komen wastes more money in litigation protecting its brand than is appropriate for a "non-profit" organization that should be more altruistic in nature.

I'm in total agreement re Komen. Also it is clear that prostate cancer and vascular disease (heart attack stroke etc) would be VERY high yield areas to make improvements.
Just saying we should be stressing things that effect many millions of people in major ways, and breast cancer is clearly one of those. The OP is overreacting here and attributing the high levels of breast cancer research and awareness to some sinister agenda, so I pointed out other reasons that breast cancer deserves a lot of attention.

Or maybe, just maybe, it's because it affects more of the U.S. Female Population than other forms of cancer(other than skin cancer)?
quote:
In the U.S., breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women after skin cancer. It can occur in both men and women, but it is very rare in men. Each year there are about 2,300 new cases of breast cancer in men and about 230,000 new cases in women.
quote:
About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
1 in 8 is a pretty scary statistic.
