If a Campbells soup can can be a cultural icon, so can this sign.

Sounds like the new owner knew very well he was within his rights to cover it.
Unless the seller included an easement, the new owner can tell the Arts Council to GFY.

I poorly phrased that, should have said an active competitor in a free market system.
You made my point following that though, what if he says frick coke, there not significant to me? Nothing, that's what. And yes, frick coke.

I never said it wasn't a cultural icon, it's clearly risen to prominence globally. What it is not is a cultural landmark of historical significance to the downtown of Baton Rouge.
Atlanta, yes. BR, no.

well, he is claiming he owns the sign. Will probably want the arts council or coke to buy it if they want to put it somewhere else.

Logic. It's not the governments place to make random competitors in a free market system institutions of some sort or another.
What impact has Coca Cola, as a brand or corporate entity, had on BR? Probably very little. It's not about it being an antique, it's about it bearing the logos of private enterprise.

The Gulf South Bottling plant is in BR...

Probably very little.
It has nothing to do with the impact Coke has had on BR. It is nothing more than an object which ties the present to the past.
That is all. It is just a part of downtown BR.

I understand that, but that doesn't mean we need politicians threatening legislation to enforce advertising one company because they made a sign that lasted 50 whole years.

One of the nation's largest bottling facilities is here

So why not have a sign for that bottler? Or does coke do their own?

Huh? Coke is the Bottler...it's actually one of the few owned by Coke, because it's that large and profitable. It's also their newest facility after deciding to invest a good $100+M in a new plant.
