Well, as I stated, my focus is on the competency issue, which although it may sound uncaring to say, isn't really a matter of the rightness or wrongness of it.
However, as to your DA hypo, in that case it wouldn't look any worse than the murders that happen every day in the big cities that no one seems to care about because it's more convenient to ignore that component of it.

But when the pro-gun uses a situation as an example of why being pro-gun works, then that example turns out to go the other way(in this instance, it'd be finding out the 11 year old murdered the 16 year old), then yea, that's not a good look for the pro-gun camp that were touting this example to prove their cause.
