I'm moving to Boston at the end of June and I'm looking for a place north of the city with an easy commute. I'll be working in the Back Bay area and my wife is looking at a job in Haverhill.

Any suggestions?

Cambridge, Brighton-Allston, Brookline, some areas of Dorchester and Jamaica Plain

Brighton Allston is a great area and easy to get downtown

I'm going to need a budget, number of bedrooms, amenities desired, pets, etc. before answering that properly.

But I'll give a few suggestions off the bat.

Haverhill is north of the city, so you're not going to want to be south of the city or you'll be screwing yourself commute-wise. That eliminates Jamaica Plain, Southie (where I live - great area to live but not for your purposes), Dorchester, Savin Hill, etc.

Unless you have a budget of $3,500/mo, you're not going to find much worth a damn in Back Bay/Beacon Hill.

I would honestly HIGHLY recommend Charlestown. Easy access to I93 north, so wouldn't be too hard to get to Haverhill. Commute to the Back Bay wouldn't be great unless you are driving. But Charlestown is a beautiful part of the city, so close to everything, and not quite as expensive as Beacon Hill/Back Bay. I lived there until getting a job south of the city and I miss it. The Navy Yard was an awesome place to live - right on the Charles River.

Cambridge is also a great place north of the city to live. Check out Watertown as well.

If you're talking about further outside of Boston Proper, then you could look in Andover. It's about 20 minutes north of the city - really nice suburban area pretty much right in between Haverhill and Boston. Your wife's commute would be amazing, but you would be driving (assuming you don't take the T) into the city in the morning and out of the city at night, which will be a freaking nightmare. That's why I would recommend staying closer to the city and letting your wife commute against traffic.

My wife is finishing up her year in Boston. I split time between Boston and NYC. We have an apartment in the West End close to MGH. Very walkable to Back Bay, North End and most other places in Boston. We pay $2,400 for a very large one bedroom (1 Emerson). There are nicer buildings around here.

West End is a great place to be if you work at MGH, which I'm guessing your wife does. Depending on how many cars they have, parking could get expensive.

When I lived downtown, I didn't have a car for the first few months. Didn't need one. Then I got a car when I took a new job outside the city. They wanted $450/mo for a parking spot. So I said frick that and moved.

True. No car and wife works at MGH. It was helpful to be across the street when the wife went into labor. $450 isn't that bad. The garage by my old place in NYC wanted $600 a month. F that. I parked the car in Jersey.

$600 is insane, but that doesn't surprise me. $450 is a lot in Boston but Boston isn't NYC. Despite what townies think.

Says anyone that understand a map. The Bunker Hill monument is in the heart of Charlestown.

Thanks for the insight. My wife and I will both be working in higher ed, so staying in Back Bay will be all but out of the question.
I'll definitely look into Charlestown and Andover.
