Those 4 boats that passed them up are under legal obligation to help. A boater is compelled by law to help another who has been involved in some sort of injury-causing crash.

yeah, everyone is prepared for losing steering on pad. They cut the cable on your boating exam at full throttle here to prepare you.

I'd like to think that the people in those boats were all just focused intently on the water straight ahead and didn't even notice the guys were in the water. This could be plausible for the trailing three boats as they all had boats not far in front of them.

No kidding. Even if you didn't see the crash those guys were obviously in some sort of trouble if they're IN the water.

Absolutely, I agree, but the only thing I can see is that slowing down with another boat right on your arse is very dangerous.

There are no brakes or brake lights. You dont want to end up with a basshole on top of you

Wear your PFD and your kill switch (although they probably had a hot foot)

The dude is on a college fishing team.

In that, he most likely is not a noob operating a boat

The first boat to pass couldn't have been that far behind the boat that spun out.

If they were going 60mph as the article says, you can use the time to figure out exactly how far back they were.

Their boat is sideways in the water at 40secs surrounded by wakes you'd pay attention to if you were approaching on the pad. First boat passes at 1:25, so they were roughly 3/4mi behind, and if it was a straight shot (likely) they should have, or did, see them.

My Bass Cat ran 72, it's crazy to think what happens on water while hitting those speeds... I never once drove that fast without PVDs or the kill switch not hooked up..

And just WHY do you need to run a small boat like that at those speeds ? It's just stupid and our waterways are over-run by bass-holes that over-power their little boats, endangering themselves and everyone around them...just juvenile, inconsiderate and buffoonery at the highest level.

While that may be the case in some situations, I don't see where they were doing anything they weren't supposed to be doing or anything out of the ordinary for a bass tournament.

Operating the boat at a safe distance from the boat ahead, wearing the proper life saving apparatus, and using the kill switch. Equipment failure is the cause, not operator error.

Yeah, this is true.

Seems like instituting a 40 or 50 mph speed limit for these tournaments could cut down on these accidents.

I assume you live in Tickfaw...

Is it ok for big Cigarette boats to run fast..?

Ever driven a bass boat...? You would understand...

My Bass Cat is 20 feet long, wouldn't exactly call it a small boat...

I can't even count the number of bass tournaments I've fished, and I have never seen one accident like that...

Besides, that accident was caused by mechanical failure, not the rate of speed they were going.. Even if they were going 40 or 50, probably the same would've happened...
