Crude oil prices continue to drop. This means in the next several days, the price of gasoline at the pump will be coming down even more. While this will be good news to most of you, I would ask that you do not plaster all over Facebook how happy you are that gas prices are down. Many people in our part of the country have lost their jobs due to the oil glut created by OPEC, and this Christmas will be a very bare one for them. My son lost his job and has moved 400 miles away, with my granddaughters, in order to find work. MANY others have been even less fortunate, losing not only their jobs, but their cars, and even the very homes that they live in.
Think about it in these terms........If you are a woman, and you marry your husband at age 25. You give him 2.7 children and the very best years of your life. Then, at age 40, that rotten bastard decides to trade you in for a DIFFERENT 25 year old. Your hard work, your dedication, your youth, are spent now, and some new hottie is reaping the fruits of your ex's salary, while you are relegated to a 12 year old mini-van, running the pre-teens to soccer practice, while holding down two piece of shite jobs just to pay for a manicure once every other month.....Well, THAT is the way an oilfield man feels. He gave up many things in his life to provide fuel for the masses. He missed half of his kids ball games. He missed birthdays, church plays, and multiple Christmases, so YOU would have gas for your car, and natural gas to power the power plants that turn the lights on in your house. And now, for all his hard work and dedication, he is summarily put out to pasture because some Saudi king has all the gold plated Rolls Royces that he can drive and decides to drive the competition out of business, because it's fun to watch the mice jump when he says "cat".
So, when you save $20 at the pump this Christmas, just remember that some oilfield families won't have a damn bowl of fruit from Santa, so please, don't rub our noses in it.

quote:

My fuel bill is exponentially larger than the average person, as my commute is nearly 400 miles, round trip. So my gas cost is WAY lower. I am glad for that, but the way some, otherwise seemingly intelligent people around here act, and speak, oilfield workers are getting their comeuppance with all these layoffs. And nothing is further from the truth. The VAST majority if oilfield workers are hard working, paycheck to paycheck, family men.

A couple of things I take from this, he doesn't understand macroeconomics, the oil glut wasn't created by OPEC necessarily.

And

Oilfield workers living paycheck to paycheck is largely their own fault.

Also a 400 mile commute?

Never understood the "you should have to pay more for something so that I can live the lifestyle I want" mindset.

No, he was probably paid pretty well for his hard work and dedication. Most people with a similar level of education don't get paid nearly that much.

However, like many lines of work, business can be cyclical. That's why you save in times of plenty.

cheap oil sucks for people who work in the industry but almost everyone else sees a benefit. It's hard for me to root against saving on one of my biggest expenses.

Sometimes I think oilfield workers and military personnel are in a competition to see who can be the most insufferable. Nurses are a close third.

It's amazing how, when the rest of us were watching our income burn up putting damn near 4$ a gallon gas in the car (not the oil guys fault, but they reaped the benefit of it) they were woohooing it up and buying new trucks and didn't have any care for our sob stories.

"Get a job in the oilfield baw!"
"Oilfield honey spending oilfield money!"

Now they are wringing their hands because they Weren't frugal and all the rest of us are supposed to feel bad?

Sorry, that dog don't hunt, cûnt.

I agree with some. But if you have ever worked in the oilfield you would see why most are lavish spenders. I worked 28 days on 3 off for over a year in the 2008 slowdown. When I got off that rig it was like I got out of jail. Wallet didn't stand a chance. But you can't spend 12-14k a month being single so I was ok. But most guys are on their 2nd or 3rd wife and have a bunch of kids.

One thing about them though. Most were good people and were taking care of those children financially. I'll give them that.

I did work in the oilfield and I've been on plenty turnarounds.

I know what it's like. Doesn't mean it's a frugal way to live life, especially if you have a wife who's gonna burn up all your money on hair dye and Marlboro reds and tattoos for Jody to eye.
